I just found out something very interesting about the "Perfect Collection" DVD set (AKA the Infernal Telecine from Hell)
First of all, I tried messing with the episodes in Vdub's filters, first throwing out one set of fields, then resizing back to 720x480. And what did I find? The newly created frames were STILL composites of two original frames, there just weren't any scanlines!
Second, Every once in a while, I'd find a frame where the top was from one frame and the bottom was from another frame, and they were blended together in the middle. Normal interlacing just isn't capable of screwing up like that.
Third, there are occasional bars of capture static.
Conclusion? The old DVDs weren't just badly telecined. They were captured from a TV set. The original progressive frames can't even be simulated. I'm fucked.
I WANT THOSE NEW DISCS!
Ask me about my secret stash of videos that can't be found anywhere anymore.
