Any Anime or AMV suggestions for my teacher?

My teacher, well Shawn wants me to suggest one anime for him to watch since he hasn't watched any before and I was wondering if anyone could help me to decide which to suggest.

He is an media teacher and an English literature, from my conversations he seems very picky on what he likes so whatever it is it has to be well directed, edited and preferably thought provoking. I think he would also prefer an anime that isn't violent...or at least violent without justification.

I wouldn't also mind showing him some AMVs so any suggestions there would be greatly appreciated, however I would prefer ones where there isn't a reliance on having watched an anime in order to understand it.

I have already got some ideas in what to show him, but I would really like to get some suggestions from other people before I decide.

Thought provoking and depressing? Or just thougt provoking? If he wants thought provoking and depressing, make him watch "Graveyard of the Fireflies" or "Barefoot Gen." Also there's EVA, although the ending does suck, there should be enough subtext to keep him satisfied...as for AMV's try Kevin Caldwell's "Believe"

As a teacher myself, though my focus is Social Studies, I recommend the following titles as they are of a more "literary" bent and probably would be enjoyed by someone who wants to be introduced to anime and what it is capable of expressing as an artform and film medium:

Grave of the Fireflies
Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro
Metropolis
Night on the Galactic Railroad
Princess Mononoke
Royal Space Force: Wings of Honeamase
Spirited Away
Spring and Chaos

If he has no familiarity with the medium, it is better to ease the transition into anime titles with "shocking" things in them like exploding bodies and stuff (a la Ghost in the Shell, Jin Roh, etc).

How about Mobile Suit Gundam 0083? It isn't as thought-provoking as Eva, but it's definately a nice stepping stone into anime. It has more of an American WWII film feel to it, like "Midway", which shouldn't repel him like some of the incredibly complex, almost irritating anime out there. Also, the thought-provoking stuff is all about a revolutionary war for space independence, which is a little easier to swallow than the nature of mankind, self awareness, and having weird "angels" attack.

Or, there's always "Akira". There's a well-rounded balance of philosophy, action, and humor to keep anyone entertained.

Eva, certainly...

Noir, in many cases, I found rather thought-provoking, and definitely depressing. And not very violent (there's a lot of suggested violence but virtually none that is graphical).

For something shorter - Jin-Roh could work (although it's quite violent).

There's quite a few more anime to fit the description, can't think of any more off hand though...

You kinda have to know the background history of the Gundam Universe, or at least be vaguely familiar with it, to really get anything out of MSG0083.

Actually, yea, something Studio Ghibli would do good to a beginner - though perhaps it's not as depressing as some of the more 'hardcore' stuff...

But, really, it all depends on personalities... heck, I know a couple of people who got hooked on anime by seeing either Eva or FLCL - and you can't call those very accessible or beginner-friendly...

Actually, just find out what sorts of live action films the guy likes. Probably give you a feel for what he might like in his anime. I like Westerns, so you know, I watch all those Anime Westerns...er yeah...

I don't think he is too keen on sci-fi.....

So far I had ben considering Grave of the Fireflies and Spirited Away.

[AV] ChOjIn 69 can you tell me more about Barefoot Gen, I haven't heard of it before. EVA definately not, I personally think its over hyped and I agree the ending was horrible.

Earth Current, I definately agree that I should avoid show him anything too violent. Also nice suggestions I am leaning towards GotF or SA, I did consider Metropolis and Royal Space Force: Wings of Honeamase but I decided against it if I'm only going to suggest 1/2 animes to him.
