The Love or Winning AMVs?

The Love, the fun I have, the statisfying feeling after finally finishing an AMV and for the most to hear that someone else enjoyed my video. My main goal is it to create a "THAT was awesome!" feeling when sb. viewed one of my videos

Even in contests, my goal is to enjoy the people and not to win it.

I love making videos... when I first got started, we didn't even know there were contests to compete in, we just thought it looked like a lot of fun and had an idea, so we ran with it. I do like competing quite a lot though- I've always been such that competition will push me to higher levels at whatever I'm doing, and I just love a good friendly competition. Winning is nice- but it pales considerably in comparison to seeing your creations evoking their intended reaction from somebody (thinking about that- I don't think I really want to see some of MJ's vids. intended reactions ). Knowing you can make somebody smile & laugh, cheer, cry, etc. with just a few minutes of video is an amazing feeling...

The primary reason I make vids is that if I have a concept I think is great, I can't wait to see if I can make it happen. Also, if it turns out well, it's nice to be able to put it online for others to see, and hopefully they can enjoy watching it as much as I did. I've submitted one of my vids to a contest before, but I didn't do so because I was after a prize, I just wanted people to see it.

The love, contests are fun in-all but I make things that amuse me
or give off an overall message I want the audence to perceve. I also
like posting even my older crap AMV's. To give people a guide of what not-to-do in a AMV and show that-even semi-good AMV artist's have to start somewhere.

Do you guys make AMVs just for the love, or just winning the AMV contest?

For me..... I'm going to admit this, I do this just to win something......

I've always done it for the "love." Well not love per se. I do it because I see a vision to a song and it continues to grow to the point that I am forced to see if I can recreate it (i.e. how accurately). It's a hobby and it should be fun first and foremost.

I kind of feel sorry for you if it's just about winning and you don't have fun or something. I find that makes people a lot more disappointed when they lose.

Myself? I find every music video a success since I had fun creating it and I like watching it. No offense to any of you (or my supposed fans), but the only person I'm aiming to please here is myself. If I like it, it's good to me...given I won't deny that it does feel nice when others like it too and hence why I share them with you guys.

"I do this for fun and creativity. The skill and the love! Doing an AMV is somewhat of an art form for me. Art isn't known unless it's seen! Another thing, this is just a hobby of mine and I make these videos on my free time. I make them to please myself, learn something new, and show people what I have accomplished.

Cool, there are contests and all... I enter them. I only enter them for people to see what I did and get their reactions. If it won, it's a plus in my book! If it didn't, oh well it didn't. I'm not all hurt about it! 8)
In the event that all of this stuff gets really really competitive (minus the iron chef stuff) I'll look at doing something else.

I love the community! You've got the stereotypes(linkinball vids), ground breakers(the more interesting vids), followers(inspired vids), veterans(been doing this for years), n00bs(you know) and the popular ones(you know them by name). It's so diverse with people from different parts of the world doing something like this."

Totally agree with you there. I know this'll sound strange, but I'd actually sort of hate winning at a con that has little to no competition. It feels a lot more rewarding when there are GREAT entries out there and at the same time when you lose, you can (hopefully) accept it since the "better" video won. It's also better for the audience since the more quality entries, the better the show and the contest is first and foremost about entertainment.

As for the striving for higher levels. I agree on that as well. It's the reason I'm in the process of making a video or two...because of the supposed competition that will be there. Now that statement may seem a bit hypocritical given my last statement, but it's not if you think it through. I am basically entering to compete against certain people since I think it'll motivate me to work very hard...if I lose, it doesn't change my perspective at all. Also, my goal is not to win..it's to make something comprable sadly

No, I wasn't there, and it wasn't aimed at you- about the only one I generally give a hard time about fangirls is Vic. The *snicker* was because having fangirls really does me absolutely no good....

I'm completely with you on the competition. I've said before and I very much mean that I would much prefer to lose a competition with a number of excellent videos than to win one where I just spanked all the competition (thankfully, the odds of that ever happening is pretty low...). I love going into making a video for a competition knowing there will be other excellent editors submitting videos- it really keeps me on my toes. I definitely aim to win- if I'm competing at something I definitely will be trying my best- but just being a part of the competition is far more important to me. I'd be every bit as happy if we held 'competitions' but didn't declare any winners.

My actual goal with the video I'm working on now (or am trying to- smegging decelerando from hell...) is to try and make something people haven't seen the likes of before and not so much to actually compete with the others...

Contrary to what Iserlohn thinks, I do it to make people happy. When people are happy, I'm happy. If a video doesnt' fare well in a contest, that's depressing, but not because I'm not winning anything, it's because that means I'm really not appealing to my audience as well as I probably could, and that doesnt' make me happy. ^_^

I started making AMVs before I knew there were contests. I then found about contests, and made AMVs, and entered them in contests hoping they would win (in the back of my mind). However learned my videos were crap, but more so I had the problem of just getting my videos shown at the conventions. So I no longer cared about winning contests, and really just wanted my videos shown infront of an audience.

I had a video shown at Yaoi-con, but it wasn't till Shoujo-con where I finally had a video shown infront of audience, with me watching, and which got a big response from the audience. I actually didn't want to win, I was just so happy that people enjoyed my video. That all I cared about at that point, was that people liked the video.

Now I make videos, to support various small contests (shoujo-con, Yaoi-con, etc), to support conventions I like. I make videos I want to make, and waiting for the next idea to grab me that I just have to do. I still hope to one day make the finals at AX, but I swear the judges just hate me. I want to make the finals at AX because it's my local convention.

Once my new computer is set up, I have one more video to do, to support a convention (another Yaoi vid for Yaoi-con). Then I'm going to start work on my vids that will hopefully give some serious competition to people at the large conventions. But they still have to be videos I enjoy making.
