Highway Crossing Frog, or how should I call AMV makers?

Post by Madzack » Sat Jun 14, 2003 8:47 pm

Now that I have your attention.

Can I call a person who makes AMVs "AMVka"? Like mangaka, or animeka, people who do manga or anime. If not, isn't there something I should call such a person other than "AMV maker" or "people who make AMVs"

I don't think anyone really cares what you call them. They'll probably know what you mean if you say AMVka. I usually say AMVer or editor, as "-ka" looks a bit silly to me tacked onto an English acronym.

But do whatever you want, I don't think anybody's going to mind either way.

Especially since "AMVka" is unpronouncable in English and Japanese...

I agree; it looks a bit silly (and sounds even sillier) to stick Japanese suffixes onto English acronyms. "AMVer" or "AMV creator" would be a better term, IMO.

If you must use Japanese, you could just approximate it: ビデオエディタ、"bideo edita". There is of course a Japanese word for "editor", but that doesn't really seem to make sense in the context of AMVs, which is pretty much a foreign concept. (Yes, I'm aware of MADs, but I wouldn't group them with AMVs for this purpose...)

I believe that if you were in a conversation with me and you refered to AMV makers as AMVka I would have understood. Now if I would have minded or not, well I really wouldn't have cared. Infact I care more to know if you wroted Highway Crossing Frog because you heard it during the 2003 MTV movies award and found it funny than that you refered to AMVer as AMVka. AMVer is really better than AMVka tho, I think I'll start using this word.

Read my Sig. Especially the last part.

This is a clearer version of my previous post. I think.

I just say creator and leave it at that. Whether I'm talking abut a video editor or The All-Mighty Lord Jehosephat is up to the listener to decide.

It sorta works if you pronounce it like "amFka"

That's a good question, I really want to know if there are any AMV creators in Japan? I mean, it would seem strange since almost every other tenticle of the fandom finds its way over the pond.

It wouldn't surprise me if there wasn't an AMV community in Japan. How so? Here in the west AMV making is part of the anime fandom niche. It acts as both a "promo" for outsiders ("Look at this cool song and animation combo!"), as well as an artistic expression.

In Japan, on the other hand, since anime is commonplace, there's more of a ho-hum attitude to it, relatively speaking. It doesn't need independent promotion from a dedicated, obscure fanbase, because the TV networks and production groups can do it and get wider exposure on their own, for instance.

Just my thinking.
I'm out...
