Well guess it's illegal but no one cares. I really didn't care if it was legal or not, I would still do AMVs, well it's illegal so I mean I won't stop doing it. Sorry if this question is over asked. From the time I joined until now it never got asked. And with the numbers of views it got guess a lot of people were asking them this question too.

Copy from one, it's plagiarism; copy from two, it's research.

Wait a minute, we copy music and we copy video. 1+1=2. Well, guess we're doing research.

This is kinda off topic, but I have seen news articles about this in the past where the RIAA was basiclly pushing for the powers to hack people's computers. This would allow them to attack peoples computers who were stealing from them, but don't you think it would also open a Pandora's Box of attacks against them, once news of this broke, and all the hackers, spammers, DOS attackers, etc... found out the RIAA was attempting to hack their computer. I know I would consider it "free reign" if they attacked me first. :)alternatefutures wrote:Oh yeah, and who pushed for the Super DMCA laws? The RIAA! So you can bet that if they try to hack into your computer and they can't and you live in a state that has this law the RIAA will do their damnedest to haul you to court.

No, because the RIAA is in bed with various members of Congress, and you are not. Simple as that.MindBug wrote:This is kinda off topic, but I have seen news articles about this in the past where the RIAA was basiclly pushing for the powers to hack people's computers. Time to go invest in security training.
(more OT) Besides, no true hacker would willingly, illegally break into someone else's system. People keep saying that this is a losing battle of terminology, but I maintain that a "hacker" is a person who enjoys testing the limits of systems and being clever about it, rather than a person who enjoys breaking the law. Two overlapping, but distinct, acts.

There sites and domain are already under constant attack. They move hosting companies every now and then to try and stay a step ahead of the attackers but it never works.MindBug wrote:once news of this broke, and all the hackers, spammers, DOS attackers, etc... found out the RIAA was attempting to hack their computer. I think the last time I was able to actually connect to their site was several months ago (although I admit I don't try very often). BTW they have riaa.com and riaa.org.

I really don't see where the problem is. People are people, so their going to do what they please regardless of the boundaries of a label. I don't want to get into that "no true hacker" nonsense because I have seen too many never ending arguments based on the deffinition of a word. People are individuals and you can't tell me that most people won't defend their turf once it has been invaded. The RIAA would be just as guilty as the "computer savy guy" that got even with them. Not to mention, they can go ahead and try me all they want. I'm unemployeed and indebt, so what do I really have to lose. LOL Just my two cents...

Think about all the money the RIAA could save each year if they didn't persue pointless suits against computer nerds. I wonder how that money figures into their annual loses.

The RIAA has power over me, you, and all those other shumucks on the street. They, and the MPAA, have already trampled all over our turf (DMCA? SDMI challenge? DeCSS? Sound familiar?) and they've gotten away with it. Oh, sure, DeCSS lives, and people still are sharing stuff. People will DDoS the hell out of their Internet presence. But the point is philosophical.
The RIAA has already cast me, you, and every other customer as criminals. The U.S. government believes this; many corporations believe it as well.
Despite the law, it is widely accepted that criminals should be treated as lesser beings, which may certainly entail that otherwise illegal methods should be used to contain them. Those criminals, of course, do not have the privileges to fight back using those same methods. Therefore it is legal for the RIAA to intrude upon US, but it is not legal for us to intrude upon THEM.
I firmly believe that the best way to hurt the RIAA is to promote what they don't want you to hear: music from the little guy, the artist not signed up with the RIAA. There's tons of it out there, and most of it is pretty good stuff.
They want to speak with money. Fine. You can speak with yours, too. It's entirely legal, and you get the satisfaction of knowing that although they're raping your rights, you're slowly butt-mauling THEM with a 2000-degree Kelvin fireplace poker, torching that grand stash of cash they have shoved up their ass.
Wow, that sounded like something Eminem would say. Eh. Whatever.

Damnit, there are no degrees on the Kelvin temperature scale. Don't know what I was thinking.trythil wrote:you're slowly butt-mauling THEM with a 2000-degree Kelvin fireplace poker, torching that grand stash of cash they have shoved up their ass.
