Fantastic Planet

Post by Kazutaka » Wed Jun 11, 2003 10:15 am

Fantastic Planet based on the book 'The Savage Planet' by Stefan Wul, directed by Rene Laloux.

I first saw this anime in 1976-77 and it had a great impact on me. I was just a kid the first time I saw this and did not understand the philosophy behind much of the work however, it started me on my road to obsession with anime and obscure/cult classix. Since then I have watched this film many times and it never fails to inspire me in some way. I have only met 2 other people who have ever heard of or seen this film, even though it was a Gran Prix winner at Cannes in 1973.

Has anyone else seen this film? If so I would welcome a disscussion on this topic.

One thing to mention here: Fantastic Planet was a French movie, not a Japanese movie.

Is that the same French anime movie that got all kinds of accolades was considered an instant classic?

If it is the title I am thinking of it was recently redone again as a theatrical live action movie release Titled Solaris starring George Clooney.

There was a review of Solaris that said the story was based on a early 70's French anime that had a incredlibly good story and pretty good animation.

And I havent seen any of them but I want to.

no, solaris is a sci-fi based on a space station gone wrong type of story. very different from Fantastic Planet theme which follows a more Planet of the Apes ironic switch where people or Oms are pets to the giant Drogs.

I have seen the one your talking about. It has a very different look and feel from normal anime titles.

I had forgotten about that one. Been years since I have seen it.

aka "La Planete Sauvage" (1973)

Didn't care for it myself. Laloux's later film, "Light Years" (aka Gandahar) (1986), was better, IMO, but still strange.

Solaris is a remake of a Russian movie of the same title.

(Just some additional info...)
