How do I re-telecine?

Post by Chaos Angel » Mon Jun 09, 2003 9:35 pm

Ok, I know I'm an absolute idiot for not knowing this, but I looked through the guides and could not find how to do this.

How would I go about re-telecining progressive footage? If this IS in the guides, and I missed it, just say so and I'll look through it again. Thanks.

It's in the video section in the "Useful AVISynth Scripts" thing under "Advanced Scripting" or something like that.

There was a thread a while back that contained some AVISynth code by Ian that would do NTSC telecine on a 24fps progressive source:

Code: Select all

AssumeFrameBased
ComplementParity
SeparateFields
SelectEvery(8, 0,1, 2,3,2, 5,4, 7,6,7)
Weave
That should work if you want to encode a telecined MPEG-2 (which I'm pretty sure is top field first. DVD MPEG-2, anyway, is...) If you want to go to DV, delete "ComplementParity" and you'll get bottom-field first.

How would I go about re-telecining progressive footage?
Step 1: Write a will
Step 2: Shoot yourself in the head
Step 3: In your next life, don't re-telecine your videos.

roflmao

You have to re-telecine if for example you want to have a copy and get it broadcasted on TV, etc.

Trust me, the AVISynth telecine doesn't look bad.

Maybe so, but it's what the vast majority of us here have to deal with for the time being. If we didn't have it, we'd likely have a dozen or so incompatible proprietary formats and there would be far less variety in what would be available because the stations would have to broadcast in several different formats to get the most viewers and would have less money for running different channels. It may suck, but we know very well how it sucks and how to deal with it- well, most of us at least.

Umm... no. If we didn't have NTSC, then we'd use 24 progressive frames per second, AKA "FILM"
