About Reviewing Some ones Anime

Post by Dead_Pool » Mon Jun 09, 2003 7:01 pm

I was doing a few reviews today for some videos, and when ever I come across the effort part I don't like to mark for that one, the AMV it self may not look good or apeal to my sense of style but I don't think I have the right to say how much effort they put into it.

I can't draw worth beans but if I try and it looks like shit, don't mean that I didn't put good effort into it. Just a thought, how do you guys feel when you come across this part of the review process

If I can watch the video and tell they spent some amount of time on it..or put some thought into it ..then I usually give them at least an 8 on effort. If it looks like they took something..threw it into whatever editing program they have..chopped it up and hit "frappe"..then its gets a lower score.

I'm a timing Lord of Duhm!!

If the footage I see has NOOO synching with the music whatsoever, like no lyric match, symbolisms, cutting to the beat of the song... moving with the instruments... etc....

Timing is part of my Effort scoring. About 90%

Editing Prowess = Effort

So if a vid is like pathetically timed and consists of REALLY long scenes, then I'll usually give it a low Action score with an even LOWER Effort score...
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

I judge effort as a kind of combination of all of the other scores, plus I try to focus on how much thought was put into the video as well as how much time was taken in the actual editing process. Plus its easy to see if someone spent enough time to get decent sound and video quality.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

I know how you feel. I generally give an 8 or higher unless something is HORRIBLE. Basically, I hate belittling an editor by saying they didn't "Try" hard enough. I mean even if a video looks bad, if it's say their first few...I'm sure they put a lot of time into it and thus the higher score. I can't even recall and instance where I have given lower. I guess that's inflation, but it's the only score I give that high since well..."An A for effort?"
