I think a lot of people aren't realizing what Earthcurrent has said. Just because we (the states) like a show doesn't mean that Japan will.
*However*, I'm not sure if I agree with that survey or even the way it was conducted. If it was based on votes/mails/etc....I highly doubt that Gundam Wing would be so high or Inifinite Ryvius or Vandread.
I have seen numerous polls like this (mainly from Newtyle) in the past and the results seem fairly consistent...while these aren't at all close.
Namely....three of the Top Five animes are *always* Evangelion, Nadia: Secret of Blue Water and Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Now the order of these series always changes, but they are consistently in the Top five. Now the other two are generally some new show like when Card Captor Sakura debutted or Cowboy Bebop. Generally a new series takes the top spot and then goes down...as you can see with Bebop.
BTW I am not saying these *are* the top anime of all time. It's all relative, but for the most part, these are what the Japanese generally have said...I'm a little shocked that the results would change so drastically in one year after them being consistent for probably over 5 years.
In any case, again, I don't really believe these results from the Japanese. For the most part, the shows above, Original Gundam, Detective Conan, Original Macross and so on are in the Top 10. Given some of them are there, but you know what I'm getting at.

I was kinda suprised at how many mecha related animes were in there.
I am not suprised Van Dread was in there it is very good, I've clued several friends in on it and they all love it. Some more than Gundam series.
I was also suprised Lupin 3rd was in there.
But there are alot of good titles in the list.

What I find really funny in the list is that Sailor Moon is number 17 and Dragonball Z is number 18! Sailor Moon kicked Goku's butt! Chicks rock!
...No pun intended.

I can't believe RK and YYH aren't on that list. If it's from the US, and recent, then those two should be moving up quickly (curse the dubbers, but they add popularity), and I always thought RK was pretty high on the Japanese lists - maybe a classic or something (maybe not, don't know so much about this one in Japan).
But then, if the list was based of US sales, then you'd think Sailor Moon and DBZ would be a lot higher, having been around longer in dubbed form.

Unfortunately, you'd be mistaken (yeah Kenshin is my 3rd favorite show). Kenshin wasn't at all popular in Japan. It was well...maybe a little above average. Same goes for Trigun. I've seen expanded lists that go to Top 50 and that's where you see most of the animes listed here. No offense to said animes (especially since I like a lot of them), but our tastes are quite a bit different. IIRC two of my three favorite shows barely break in the top 40 or so...I think Escaflowne was like #33 and Kenshin #37 or something.Arigatomyna wrote:I can't believe RK and YYH aren't on that list. Like you said, if we went by states, those shows would probably easily be in the Top. Actually if you wanna get an idea of the Top anime in American...look at the Top 30 Anime within the .org itself. Given it's not *every* fan, but I think the 30000+ fans here is a sufficient number to get an idea. Then again, if we went by the states, DBZ would be the most popular followed by Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh.

I forgot one last thing:
Why does such a ranking matter to you guys? I mean, so long as you like the anime, what does it matter if in Japan they didn't like it as much as you? People don't think the same or like the same things and obviously this shows it.
I'd also not wanna agree with the Japanese since a lot of their older males are pedofiles...and you think I'm joking. Oh and they can buy used panties from vending machines too...yeah so why do you want them to agree with you?

Heh, I've heard some...interesting things about a few Japanese men, and seen it brought to 'life' in some animes, but I try not to pay any mind (we have our share of nasties
). But I'm not too surprised to see my top faves aren't on that list, so long as Pokemon isn't on there, I won't mind. I'm getting used to my preferences swinging shy of the top lists anyway (even on the org list - though I have a few faves on that one) - but it's still interesting to see what a majority of people (Japanese or American) think about anime and how they rank it.

hmm, you got to ask yourself, why would i want my tastes to be the same as everyone else????, surely, to have the exact same tastes as everyone else is to lose a sense of identity, we all become the same, spurned out of the cultural society, to take meaningless jobs in order to support the next wave of delusion kids that will look aftwer us when were old and decrepid............but i chose life, to have that big tv, 3 pice sofa etc...
im glad that my favorite animes arnt all on there, i wouldnt want to be the same as everyone else...............well, thats my two peneth worth....
