wondering about the direction this a-m-v.org is going
Can somebody clue me in, am I not allowed download the vids without donating anymore? I thought registering in itself was a little over the top; but I'm willing to go along with that. But a two week waiting period? What am I buying a gun?
I really like AMV's; I admire what you guys do, and I used to admire the site, but I wonder seriously about what's going on really. Can somebody bring me up to speed? What are the rules?

The 2 week waiting period is for new members, sorry for the inconvenience but a lot of people pass by here, sign up and dissappear to never return. So to help prevent excess bandwidth usage there is a 2 week waiting period put in place....this only keeps you from d/ling Local videos for 2 weeks...Direct and Indirect are still at your disposal to download. 2 weeks isn't really that long...then again I was a member here long before the carrot so it was never implemented on me.
You do not have to donate....it's just suggested heavily by Phade, and would help this site, but it isn't mandatory.
The rules you seek are here: http://www.animemusicvideos.org/phpBB/v ... .php?t=289
both site and forum rules, follow them wisely and don't use loop holes as an excuse for not following them, it's been tried before and those people were banned...from the forum at least.

I'm glad. I still wonder about the logic, but I guess I can accept it if it's only a 2 wk wait. I like this site, I didn't want to have to delete the bookmark. There was once a time I wanted to figure out how to do a few AMV's of my own; I just couldn't sort out where to start. Either way, thank you for reassuring me that this is not a program of forced-donations.

The logic is that this is community website. It's run by the community(and Phade *wink* *wink*). That bandwidth is our money going to work. The more people in the community, the more people will donate and keep that bandwidth flowing.
If there wasn't a waiting list I am pretty sure quite a few people would upload their video. Post a quick link to it and then tell people to make a quick account to download the video. The person does this and then never returns. Heck we already have a ton of people who signup post once or list a few videos and never return. That's actually fine since the ORG is meant for cataloging AMVs and being a active member is optional. Also at that point and time the site was a 'for fun' site(still is mainly) and Phade could cover the costs out of his own pocket.
Now that we have a couple thousand dollar bandwidth bill to pay each month, there is not the luxury to do the same thing with LOCAL downloads. People need to get involved and become a semi-active member to get the benefits.
The site gets about 81 new members per day. Imagine if all they did was just come in download five or six videos, then leave. If this repeated over and over and over again. I am pretty sure these members could drain a major chunk of bandwidth.
The two-week waiting period lets people come in and take a look at the website. Hang out if they want and it also lets them see what all they can do so long as they help out a little bit. If people can't wait, they can obviously cough up a $5 - $10 donation and forgo the two weeks.
The limit is in place to prevent abuse and people just joining to download videos. More than likely if they have to wait the two-weeks to download then they are more likely to become active members rather than just grabbing a video and running with it. More members = more donations = better services. The Carrot is already starting to slow down a bit, I've noticed. :p So more donations is a good thing.

For the most part the logic still eludes me. It sounds to me like you're trying to get rid of the fly-by-nighters. Why would the fly-by-nighters do anything BUT download a few videos and go? Now! I CAN understand making people who want to post a video on YOUR servers register. Quite frankly, I can even understand making donation mandatory if they want to take up your space and your bandwidth to do it, but do most people who come by even understand how to make a video much less post one that's worth garbage? Personally, I still have to figure out how to even reliably rip a DVD in XP before I can so much as get started. Do you have "community members" who are active in other ways besides donations?

Well, I'll agree to that; that part is just sad. Rumor has it PBS has the same problems. Pitiful how many people don't keep their word these days. One wouldn't think it would do anything to prevent false pledges after the two week period is over though.
