Escaflowne's Yakusoku wa Iranai - my classic favourite for reasons already mentioned.

Favorite openings:
Mobile Suit Gundam (God...tis so campy...I love it!)
Overman King Gainer (dancing mecha...need I say more?)
Outlaw Star
Gundam X (Resolution opening)
G Gundam (all three openings)
Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (For a series where I'll admit I found the majority of the cast a pain and found the story stretching at best, the intros were quite cool)
Shin Getter Robo OVA (aka Getter Robo: Armageddon) (both openings, each cool for their own reasons)
Read or Die
Heavy Metal L-Gaim (saw this in that video of two hours of mecha openings...with an intro like this, I REALLY hope this series gets licensed...

Dragonball Z ("We Gotta Power" opening)
Cowboy Bebop
Evangelion
Zeta Gundam (both openings, although I prefer the second one)

Eh, everyone seems to forget about that show. And then there's the majority of people who have never even seen it. Poor saps just dunno what they're missing. 52 episodes of pure awesome.
