The consensus by most High school techers and college professors is that the literary skills of students are dropping, even though more and more people can read.
They blame elementary school teachers and the elementary system of simply passing on kids into middle and high school without proper educational screening.

I blame parents for not taking a more active interest in their kids' education. My mom had me reading stuff like "The Hobbit" when I was around six. I love video games and movies (and obviously anime), but if I ever have kids, they're not getting into any of that until they're in high school. They can read, play volleyball, and surf like I did. I will bitch-slap any child of mine who types the nonsense I see in chatrooms like "how old r u phr34k, i cood kik ur azz".
Then again, I'm not a parent yet, so I guess I should wait and see . . . .

Like I said, alot of it goes back to the parents. Personal responsibilty gets pushed deeper into the trash can every day in this country. Anyway, how to get this back to anime . . . . . . well, I can't think of anything, except the kids in Onegai Teacher had problems in stuff other than illiteracy, ha (man, that show was messed up). What was this thread about?
