How do you set up your own computer as a server?
Got a program called WWW File Share, and it got me thinking.
Is there like a more permanent way to make your own computer like a server? I'm asking this since everytime I restart/shut down my computer, the address changes.
Anyone know a similar way how to do this?

Isn't there usually a way to request a fixed address from your ISP

One way is what klinky said: dynamic DNS. Open Domain Server is another possibility to what he mentioned.Ko Oh Yoku wrote:Got a program called WWW File Share, and it got me thinking.

Another way is to buy a static IP address from your ISP. Verizon, for example, charges an extra $30 a month, and I think that requires a business-grade account (translation: even more $$$).How does your dynamic DNS service work?
You install ODS client software on your computer. The client software communicates with ODS' servers to tell it what your current IP address is. That address is then mapped to a static hostname at ODS which can be accessed from anywhere on the Internet.
BTW, CuteFTP is not server software. It is used to communicate wih FTP servers.

Kinda funny how on many occasions the more recent their join date the lower their common sense level. 8)Dead_Pool wrote:What about Cute FTP ? does anyone use that ?
Just a coincidence I'll bet though.
