technically excellent anime?

Post by sunandshadow » Fri May 23, 2003 3:39 am

Hey all! ^_^

I'm in charge of a project to make a short original anime movie, and I just wondered which animes you all think are technically excellent so I can have some good examples to look at. Please say which aspect you think are excellent: story, characters, art design, or animation.

I personally thought Berserk was very good, if excessively gory; Crest of the Stars was very solidly designed, if excessively childish; and Ai no Kusabi was beautiful, although I will never understand why many mangaka feel the need to have such tragic endings.

PS. I need a beta reader if anyone's willing to look at a yaoi script. ^_^

PPS if you happen to be an artist and interested in this project, which is called "Uke On Top", please see the yahoogroup Passionate Kiss.

Metropolis is technically superb, as are all the ghibli movies.

Although given your subject matter I think a different approach is required, so look at:

Wolfs Rain
Kaze to ki no uta
shojo kakumei utena (and the movie)

AH! My Goddess: The Movie has stunning artwork and production values. And I agree that Metropolis is also very good.

I also agree with Ian on Metropolis and Ghibli films for stunning art.

At the same time, for series with excellent aret (keep in mind I haven't seen anything in 3 years so they may be 'old'):
-Cowboy Bebop
-Escaflowne

both are near OVA quality in animation and quality. This is RARE for a TV series since they receive less money (or rather have 26 episodes to use the same amount as 4 OVAs). I believe Escaflowne was the highest production value in a tv series until Bebop beat it (same studio I think). Again, I don't know about recent stuff, but these are the two that stand out in my mind since they are both beautiful.

Shamanic Princess definitely ranks high up there on the animation and design scales. It's too bad more people haven't seen it.

Oh yeah, another one...Wings of Honneamise. Story, animation, design, everything...just...wow. Oh yeah, the budget for the thing was outstanding, too :P

I much agree.

Also Macross Plus is another good example, if I remember right it has the record as the most expensive OVA made.

I'm gonna disagree with everyone who says the art on Metropolis was good at this time. I hated the animation of that movie, it seemed very blocky and awkward to me.

You can't go wrong with Studio Ghibli. I was working with their footage for my recent project and was once again stunned by the quality of the animation.
