How to make pimpin' Avatars
8)
Ok people. I'm pretty sure most of the people on this website made their own avatars, as most of them are pretty unique (like Absolute Destiny's or Klinky's). What is an excellent program to use to create Compose) these avatars?
Secondly, what is an excellent program to use to create avatars from previously existing jpegs (or other picture files)?
Finally, what is the best program for creating a .gif file (from anime)?

I used paint & photoshop to make my avatar.
My avatar is actually my self-portrait from this comic I made:

I made the entire comic in MS Paint, but I used Photoshop to delete the white so that it would be transparent, then I resized it and saved it as a gif w/ transperancy.
If I have a existing picture I want to use then I use photoshop since it has a nice cropping/selection tool. So I can make a box that follows the 1:1 pixel ratio, then just resize it to 80x80 without it getting distorted.
If I need to animate something I use the rather old Gif Consutrction Set from AlchemyWorks(I believe).

For static avatars, I just use Photoshop.
Marquee-->Crop-->Resize-->Save for Web.
To take a source from a fansub, open it in Virtual Dub, find the frame you want to use, and use the copy source Frame to Clipboard, and do as above.
To take a source from DVD, use frame capture, do as above.
gifs:
To make an animated gif, get your DVD source as you would for making an AMV, open the avs file in Vdub, select the range of frames you want to use, and then use File-->Save Image sequence to save all the frames you want to use, then crop, resize and animate using Image Ready, Photoshop's companion program.
For taking sequences from fansubs, do the second part as above:
Select the range of frames you want to use, and then use File-->Save Image sequence to save all the frames you want to use, then crop, resize and animate using Image Ready, Photoshop's companion program.
I know Photoshop is $$$, but maybe you can get a student discount.

Woo! I've got my drunk on tonight!

Ulead sells a program called "GIF Animator" for about $50. Don't know if that's still on the market (it is listed for online sale). However, if you get their image editing package called "PhotoImpact" - "GIF Animator" is included. Retail price is $90, but you can find it at Best Buy, CompUSA, etc. for less.kearlywi wrote: Ok people. PhotoImpact will also do those other things you ask about, like convert files to GIFs. It also includes some animated effects; e.g. if you have a still pic and want to add a moving spotlight or maybe a water-ripple effect, it'll do that and more.
Some "GIF Animator" samples can be seen here:
