yes, to fence with a rapier you need to be very good and very fast, but if your not and somone takes a heavier weapon (ie. broad sword) and your stuck with a little rapier ... your screwed ... exspecialy if they know how to use that heavier weapon. Oh, and by the way, a rapier is not designed to slash, but it's designed around thrusting.Savia wrote:Rapiers are possibly one of the best hand-to-hand weapons ever created. Very fast and light, and with good stabbing potential. The idea is that you 'brush off' an opposing blow with the rapier blade (only if you are very good and fast, btw) so that it just misses before whipping the blade up and giving them a stab in the neck. Not for everyone, but a powerful weapon in the hands of someone who know what they're doing.Propyro wrote:...really quick and elegant weapon try a Saber or a Rapier, though rapiers are uselsess if your oponent is using anything heavier then a rapier. (by the way, i'm not too fond of rapiers)

Really, a gun can build an excellent warrior. Accuracry, perception, strength from carrying guns + ammo, cleaning kit, like an army sniper.
patience, endurance, excellence, and discipline, as well as intelligence and intuitive thinking are all things a gun tolling warrior needs in order to perform heroic acts.

yes but not the warrior were talking about. Guns are a whole different ball park and use totaly different rules from melee combat. Well ... osrta different ... they sitll have that "first guy that dies looses" rule.Lyrs wrote:Really, a gun can build an excellent warrior. the definition of a gun is a firearm and vice versa ... though black powder guns are considerably more difficult to use (at least if you go traditional they are) then a modern gun they are still guns ...kthulhu wrote:Do black powder firearms count, then?chaoticstormbringer wrote:Oh and a gun is not a weapon, it is a tool of destruction. A weapon would take time to use, not point and shoot. thats my oppinion anyway (shrug)

combat went down hill when the crossbows started taking over and guns. explosives are worse since its set and run your ass off.
but still, dodging bullets and hiding behind cupboards is still not skill. Yes you have certain tasks for such weapons to fire, but they are like cheapshots in a videogame.
not close combat, you don't go up and fight with a gun at point blank range eh? most of the time you only see a minimal portion of your target and thats what you "pull the trigger" at. Nothing to it.
swords however, you get close to your enemy and you block, parry dodge, counter, intercept swing, thrust, chop, lunge, impale, behead you name it its done, but people have different skills in the arts of sword and thats what makes a warrior. the art of the sword is killing.

I agree ... and by the way, bullet dodging is about 90% luck and 10% common sense. Stay low and move in erratic patterns ... if your lucky you might get off wiht jsut a bullet in the ass, if you got horse shoes up yoru ass you might not even get shot.chaoticstormbringer wrote:combat went down hill when the crossbows started taking over and guns. explosives are worse since its set and run your ass off.

But there are finer points to combat with firearms ... just look at Vash from trigun, if you manage to do the shit he can do then i don't know what the fuck to say. But i do agree that melee combat is a much more demanding task, physicaly demending, demanding in skill ... everything about it says you need to constatnly refine your technique ...
oh and about Samuri vs European barbarian ... look at some of the discontinued highland games ... love cattle dismemberment ... rip a cow apart with your bare hands ... and they did it pretty quickly ... but i still like samuri's more then barbarians.
