I thought I was the only one that remembered that one. That was the first anime I ever saw.paizuri wrote:Lion King was Kimba the White Lion.

Pretty sweet eh? It made the movie 2x more enjoyable when I noticed that animation part of it.Chaos Angel wrote:Oh, I completely did not catch that aspect at all. ::bows::dwchang wrote: One could even extrapolate psychologically that the reason villains have narrow eyes is because they see the world that way...only one way...theirs. This was done excellently in Perfect Blue.
SPOILERS!!!!!
If you notice the killer has strange and small eyes and the main character's agent (the female who was in the end the villain) also had narrow eyes. It was obvious this was because they could only see the world through their own distorted and narrow view...which was even further exaggerated by their eyes having strange features.
It does make sense, though...

Well, I can see the similarities, but at least with the Lion King, this is a fairly well-documented instance where Disney blatantly stole from an anime and the creator didn't have enough power to beat them (makes sense).Propyro wrote:*looks back at disney/classic lit posts*
meh, could have been wrong, it was jsut something that we had loosely covered in writers craft when we were learning a bit about adaptating older peices to make them apply to modern times.
You'd think they'd have been a bit more elusive about it like not change one letter in his name (K -> S) and have him not be white.

Re: If the "eyes" went away...
That is how I felt about last year's Spirit. I was really impressed somebody had the guts to do an animal story while using the real sounds the animal makes and not dubbing voices.Chaos Angel wrote:
Hunchback is very good, I find it to be very powerful, but I think some of it's effect is lost because it tries to be both a serious drama and a children's entertainment movie. They throw in the gargoyles and the musical numbers to keep the kids entertained (although I do love Quasimodo's song) while the adults watch the drama aspects. It tries to hard to have it both ways, and it would be better if it focused on the drama aspects.
But I was still disappointed by many many other aspects of the director's judgement...not limited to the some of the songs they added. (I listened to the commentary....my eyes hurt from all the rolling because of their constant self congratulating) Not that I don't love Brain Adam's raspy singing...
Disney is almost the generic word for animation in this country. I also liked Balto from some years back and as a video production major, I was appalled at people's complete lack of interest in production values whatsoever. In my opinion, it's not that hard to at least realize that all animation doesn't come from the land of mouse ears. It's rather insulting to the Korean guys who actually drew the thing

I think I heard simba is swahili for lion. If that is the case then perhaps they were so confident of themselves they didn't care if anyone knew? I actually remember Matthew Broderick (the voice of Simba) thought he was reading for a remake.dwchang wrote:

They could at least have said they were sorry but I guess that would be admitting they'd stolen some of the idea.
Anyone else remember the Atlantis rip-off debates? That one is less clear cut.
I don't hate disney or cartoons at all...the very first animated music videos I ever saw were on D-TV

hey misty ... jsut out of curiosity ... are you related to a John Caldwell who lives up here in Ontario? He's a resource teacher at my school, St. margurite d'Youville. hes kinda tall, short light brown hair, glasses and hes married and has a son, i think his name is either Jhonathan or Nathan. Just curious, this guy has said he has relitives in the states, but never mentioned where, but odds are that i'm wrong, since i'd wager that Caldwell is probalby a pretty common last name.

Didn't know that about Loin King, Interesting.
What makes me turn up my noise to Disney these days is they keep breaking into songs. 'Yes I'm so evil and I'm going to explain this in my musical Solo' wtf?
As for those Narrow eyes things, sometimes when the guy is really pycho there eyes are even closed.

I have to respond to this. Not only was Tezuka inspired by Disney he went out of his way to parody him just pick up a copy of metropolis. In it he gives credit to disney and has killer mickey mouse rats. I would say that most of the best cel animation ever done was by Disney from the 30s to the 60s. Now on to more recent stuff. The sickest thing about disney is it is just like Hollywood in that it has to make the most politically correct films it can. Lets face it Pocohantas was udder crap and the creators of it deserve to be shot talk about fucking up history. Every Disney film now has a strong female character and a guy she makes look like a moron. The bad guys are always white and male. Disney has went out of its way to make every film target an ethnic group no matter how crappy the film is. I hate modern Disney! When they get they're heads out of they're collective asses and start focusing back on the animation like they did in days of yore I will be happy. The only stuff I have liked from disney since 1989 are The pixar films and Lilo and stitch (Although the animation blew). I also hate how Disney advertises every crappy movie they make as "Animated classic" which shows how thier thinking works. Fuck Disney there is way better american animation out there( better in fact than most anime which is the fucking french word for animation not Japanese). This rant has been brought to you by
