Hunchback is very good, I find it to be very powerful, but I think some of it's effect is lost because it tries to be both a serious drama and a children's entertainment movie. They throw in the gargoyles and the musical numbers to keep the kids entertained (although I do love Quasimodo's song) while the adults watch the drama aspects. It tries to hard to have it both ways, and it would be better if it focused on the drama aspects.
That is how I felt about last year's Spirit. I was really impressed somebody had the guts to do an animal story while using the real sounds the animal makes and not dubbing voices.
But I was still disappointed by many many other aspects of the director's judgement...not limited to the some of the songs they added. (I listened to the commentary....my eyes hurt from all the rolling because of their
constant self congratulating) Not that I don't
love Brain Adam's raspy singing...
Disney is almost the generic word for animation in this country. I also liked Balto from some years back and as a video production major, I was appalled at people's complete lack of interest in production values whatsoever. In my opinion, it's not that hard to at least realize that all animation doesn't come from the land of mouse ears. It's rather insulting to the Korean guys who actually drew the thing
