Live explosives, I'm not for. Not without lots of training and a valid reason (i.e. demolitions, fireworks, special effects), which is common sense to have, anyways. If someone wants to own inert explosives and say, an RPG-7 launcher for collecting reasons, that's fine by me. Good luck finding live ammo for a Russian launcher here in the US, anyways

Why own an M-16? At the very least, the ammo is cheapish, and you don't have to reload as often. The military and civilian M-16s are practically the same, except that the military ones have a three round burst firing mode. And by saying that handguns (which are probably the most used type of firearm in crime) are "better" than an M-16 for public safety...I just don't see it. Even ONE person wrongly dying from firearms is not a good thing. You think a potential ten is acceptable? Then why not thirty (the typical capacity of a fully loaded M-16 magazine)?

The issue is not the type of weapon - the issue is keeping the weapon away from those who would misuse it. I can touch an M-16, you can touch an M-16, and Phade can touch an M-16 - all of us could touch this "bad bad deadly" instrument, and yet none of us would feel the need to go on a killing spree (likely).

A crazy person, on the other hand, could touch a spoon, and then try to dig his tablemate's eye out with it.

So to conclude, PEOPLE are the dangerous weapon.

And as an addenum: as I've mentioned before, in Switzerland most of the houses have a loaded, fully automatic SIG assault rifle (the Swiss equivalent of the M-16) in their homes, BY GOVERNMENT MANDATE. And yet the crime rate is pretty much equal to the rest of Europe (in other words, LOW). People, folks, people.

All righty then - what's a good limit for civilian firearms ownership? Bolt action rifles and two-barrel hammer shotguns? How about just single-shot rifles and shotguns? And how about NO handguns, unless you go through roughly the same sort of procedures outlined above for full-auto weapons? Or how no handguns in general? And no concealed carry, unless you could make your case in a court of law that you needed it, or were part of the political elite *cough* Ted Kennedy and his Uzi toting guards *cough* ?

Saying that someone can't have a semi-auto rifle with a 30-round magazine capacity, while saying that they CAN have a bolt-action rifle or shotgun, or even a handgun (which ARE the guns used more often in crime, as I previously mentioned) is basically accusing them of a thought crime - which is WRONG.

It's basically the same as saying all black people sling rock and collect welfare, all Latinos steal, all Asians are socially inept math geeks, and all white people are racists working to keep anyone with skin darker than lily-white down. Maybe they don't do it, but they sure might be THINKING about it.

Bullshit. One useless death from a gun is a bad thing. If you're ok with that, since you all don't claim to be for most forms of gun control, then what's another 29 dead, really? Assault-type rifles aren't the deadly end-all, be-all of killing. Don't believe the hype.
