Here are my two cents... or three....
Grave of the Fireflies is a deeply moving film about the hardships of two young kids as they try to survive in war torn Japan. While the topic is not original (there have been alot of movies that focuses on the struggle of the commoner during war times), it does gives us the persepectvie from the EEEEVIL EMPIRE OF JAPAN! I loved the movie (although I felt it was a little dragged on at times, i wish i could read the book, dont remember if there is one), and the argument of why they didnt beg or get a job is just... stupid. Obviously they couldnt work because there were no jobs, there was poverty all over Japan, and they couldnt beg either because there really was no one to give them money. Ive lived in places where there are almost naked people in the streets begging for food, and no a single penny in their little plastic cups. This movie is not antiamerican or anything, its just about a boy and his sister struggling to surive, it could have been a civil war, or a plague, and it would have been the same scenario.
Unless you dont have a heart, or are a republican, you will not like this movie. So what that Japan attacked Pearl Harbor? That has nothing to do with the movie (although Pearl Harbor was an excellent excuse for the Americans to join the war), and I recommend it to everyone.
Besides... Japan gives us Anime, so they cool.

Dude don't use the term evil empire of Japan lightly it was in every way as bad as Nazi germany. It's fine if you like the movie I never said it was the worst in history. But he could have very easily got a job doing war work for which he would have recieved ration cards and his aunt wouldn't have kicked him out.

United States is a country were employment rate is the highest in the world. You think other people around the world dont work because they are lazy or because they can make a better life by stealing? Japan was overpopulated (have you seen how small that freakin island is?) and war work, what do you mean by war work? that kinda confused me.

i am now gonna try to go through life knowing that someone(last mentioned individual) actually posted that saving the father of one american child justifies the death of countless japanese children...was i reading that wrong or is that what u said, because if it was god help you
uncle milo seems to often be in a position to defend opinions (which every1 should and does for the most part, and i know u do also), but ppl get on ur case way too much, yes you blow up about things, but ppl blow up about you blowing up (as i recall, two wrongs don't make a right) i happen to enjoy ur (i wonder when i changed from talking about you to talking to you) posts/rants to a degree, you are very opinionated which is a good thing since this is a forum thread and that's what it's about, you just get caught up in the moment for too long at [many] times
bak to topic
the movie i saw as depicting one of the worst possible positions for a person to be in (..whoah, boys to men - how do i say goodbye to yesterday just started playing on my computer, my friend budafuka is gonna do a GotF video with that song, oh the irony

i also saw that Saita (spelling) should have done slightly more to help out Setsuko (spelling), he was way too neglecting towards the end of the movie, i did not see anything about him being too proud anywhere in the movie as someone said he did earlier in the thread
i like the idea that he should have begged the farmer for a hand-out (but since the farmer said that he could barely sell enough to support his family, i don't think that would've worked out too well)
another method he could have used was bringing Setsuko along with him wherever he went (when he wasn't stealing since she would have slowed him down) bringing her along would have at the very least givin her safety with her brother looking over her and she would not have started eating the things she ate

the question i have is why didn't Saita go and withdrawl the money from the account sooner, i didn't get why he didn't think of it before or why he couldn't do it?
btw: i remember that Roosevelt also critized the japanese to egg them on and try to persuade them to war, but i'm not clear on the details of that
i saw Tora! Tora! Tora!, sweet movie, according to the movie, roosevelt knew that the japanese were going to attack, but they assumed it would be the philipines that the jap attacked, but pearl harbor
the ships were new and getting the bugs out.....riiiiight *cough*BS*cough*
i also don't see america as the evil enemy in the movie, i agree that the enemy was for the most part faceless (but definately not a far away threat)
and i'm fairly certain that the japanese did not surrender prior to hiroshima and nagasaki, they surrendered days after nagasaki (losses at Hiroshima+losses at Nagasaki+Russia declares War+possible 3rd atomic attack from us (which was being considered by roosevelt)=bad news for japan) i think the movie was great (both Tora!x3 and GotF)
one is historically accurate (way better than pearl harbor movie)
the other is an emotional giant (great movie, miyazaki right?)

By war work, he means work associated with Japna's wartime military complex. Though by the time I post this, I'm certain someone else will have told you this already....Meksikanfude wrote:United States is a country were employment rate is the highest in the world. Some other things: Oni is correct that the boy probably could have found work in one of the many factories in and around Tokyo doing some form of labor. Yet he was still a child, though quickly thrust into the world of adults with the death of his mother. The treatment he recieves from his aunt isn't the greatest and I always viewed his refusal to work, but willingness to sell his mother's kimono to support himself and his sister as an act of teenage rebellion, after all he flaunts the fact that he was able to buy rice seperately. He wants to stand on his own, but he doesn't want to fully accept the responsibilities of an adult, which can be seen in his rather frivolous behavior when they move out to the countryside. It is false pride that makes him believe that he and his sister can survive without relying on anyone else, and by the end of the film, we see the consequences.
Personally, I find the fates of the two children in the movie quite sad: They both try to maintain the innocence of childhood alive, but the reality of the war won't allow for it.

i guess ur right since i don't really remember posting that...kinda though
i guess from looking at it now i was using sarcasm to say that someone was being confused by something that they really shouldn't have been confused about
which thread is that from btw, maybe i can salvage it...nah, i'd just stare at it and say '..meh' but i'd still like to know which thread
and thnx for pointing out my rant gone too far

Are you an absolute retard? When did I say other people were lazy wtf??? Anyway war work is obvious let's see japan was at war and needed everybody in the factorys making stuff. Thats a double duh.Meksikanfude wrote:United States is a country were employment rate is the highest in the world. Another troll oh well. Um How many carriers did we have at the beginning of world war 2 what was naval doctrine based on at the time?
Yes they were working kinks out of the brand new Aircraft carriers because they had envisoned them only as support ships and recent events had shown they had much better uses. Unfortunatley the Japanese realized this quicker. And as for the saving of american lives at the cost of japanese ones I stand 100% behind what I said and I don't think I am wrong for saying it. If you didn't want to fight a war and somebody forced you into it then that country that forced you into would have hell to pay. Righteous 100%. Makes freakin perfect sense to me.
