Lame being, well... lame?

For so many years, I was able to right-click on my video files (mpg, avi, etc) and select PROPERTIES, and get the file details pretty much instantly.

Now, ever since I installed that LameACM.inf, it takes forever. The PC just thinks and thinks, and eventually the file details will pop up. The larger the filesize, the longer it takes. A 30MB will take 5 seconds, and a 150MB+ file will take near half a minute. The poor PC just whirs and whirs...

At first I thought I just needed to do a defrag, but then I tried doing the same thing to Video files without any audio. BOOM: instant popup. Just like everything used to be. I've done a few more experiments, and the problem's definitely restricted to video files with an audio track. Without one, the File Details are shown in less than a second, be it a 5MB video file or a 700MB movie. Audio track = horrendous delays. (plus, the File Details tell me the audio is LAME MP3, when I VirtualDub says otherwise)

Does anyone know how I can fix this? I tried removing the LAME audio codec from Control Panel/Multimedia, but the lag is still there. I'd like to keep Lame, but without this horrible side-effect.

Erm..

Install AMVapp.

The LAME ACM (Audio Codec Manager) is installed for encoding and decoding, whereas if you only want to decode the ACM for that is already installed with Windows. You shouldn't need to install any INF file for LAME if you just want to decode LAME audio.

LAME MP3 = MPEG-1 Layer III LAME

I did install AMVapp. That's where I got the LAME codec from.

And I do want to encode in Lame. Otherwise, what's the point of having it? Regardless if an MP3 is encoded in Lame, Fraunhoffer, Blade or any of the others, they can all still be played as a normal MP3.

MP3's aren't like AVI's, where you need the codec that made 'em.

;o you don't need the codec that made avis either, thats why the guide tells you to use the divx directshow decoder even for xvid content. So long as something follows a standard all compliant decoders should manage (be it mpeg 4 video or mpeg 1 layer III audio).

Someone figured it out. It's not an audio-related problem.

Apparently I installed a program that updated the Microsoft Installer program (Installshield, or somethin'). Whenever I clicked PROPERTIES, Windows would Copy & Paste the file into a temp folder or something like that.

It makes sense, y'know. All that wurring and grinding, my poor PC thinking and thinking... it does the exact same thing when you Copy & Paste a big MPG or AVI. While I may not know what caused the problem, I DID grab the solution:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Open your RUN box from the START button in Windows, and
enter the following: rundll32 msisip.dll,DllUnregisterServer
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Restart the PC, and when you come back you should be able to Right-Click on big video files and click PROPERTIES, and they should pop up instantly. Mine did.

Yay! After so many horrible months, the evil is finally over!
