and on average/generaly how far do you go in your advice? Do you typicaly say something like "needs work" or a 5 page essay going to over the trasitions that should have been used and a new scene selection list and why they should be there?

Well, telling people what YOU want in the video is not good. You can say "This didn't work, and here's why I think it didn't work" without telling them what to do with their own video.
