AMV's, Who started it all

Post by AtomicWeezleman » Mon Apr 21, 2003 8:42 am

So there i was, just sitting in front of the TV, having a few drinks when all of the sudden, this thought came to mind

Is Doctor Pepper qualified to be a soft drink ?(stupid question i know, but i was drunk)

So since i was in the set of mind for serious thinking, i started to ponder the mysteries of the universe......but one answer eluded me
What started the AMV craze??
I play violent computer games! I could snap at any minute!!!!

Some masochistic bastard...

No, seriously, some of the first AMVs made are made using two VCRs and an analog editting machine. I can't even begin to imagine doing it that way...

Kevin Caldwell invented amvs

I dunno, duane johnson's stuff is pretty old. Aluminum has mentioned a time when the community was quite small. I guess you'd have to do some back research with the older creators (older as in been doing it longer of course) to get clues as to something like that.

that is correct...1982. But as far as a community goes...probally wasn't till the internet started kicking into gear where anything really got started.

I started making AMVs in 1991 8) - Two VCRs, and I was using mostly non anime source.. like clips from commercials, 3 stooges clips, Dr. Who, and some cartoons like Scooby Doo and stuff. First actual ANIME music video I did was in 1999... unless you count the video game music vids I did back in 1994-1997... I was inspired to make those vids by Nintendo's "Play it Loud" commercials.. I thought those commercials were the coolest things ever. The commercial for Donkey Kong Country that had music by the Butthole Surfers in the background.. Oh man.. That commercial was fucking awesome

a lot of people say Corn Pone Flicks... Bobby Beaver aka Ck-o was around the same time as well and Duane Johnson who is a hentai merchant now (hahaha sorry Daune I couldn't resist). I bet this could be debated and researched as to the one who started it all, but in the end does it really matter? I would say the original group of amv creators deserve the same amount of recognition / props for what they did and started for the rest of us.

As a contemporary of CPF and C-ko, I can say that we stood at the forefront of AMVs, but we didn't start the fire.

I don't know who did the first, but I certainly recall stuff attached to my old fan-subbed copy of Be Forever, Yamato that was done by "You Know Who". Apparently the guy was using his workplace's equipment after-hours for editing and subtitling and didn't wish to be found out.

Then there's that Tommy Shaw "Girls with Guns" video set to Dirty Pair...but the very first AMV? A mystery. I'd love to know what source material was used for this alleged 1982 AMV.
