Free Will and Anarchy

Anarchy would only be appropriate in a society where everyone is intelligent enough and willing to fend for themselves in the jungles. Society was built in order to guarantee protection from pack animals and dangerous beasts, but later became a powerhouse that defends itself from other powerhouses. As far as free will goes, indeed society's laws prohibit certain actions, but you still have the right to do as you wish, just in society's guidelines, but being that these rules were built by man's own free will, I guess political systems really don't matter. Whether we have a government or not, if you do something objectionable to others they are going to try and "right your wrong" and that will happen even if they aren't waving a flag. At least in a society if they take direct action against you, they themselves have to go under judgement themselves... Unless they're cops...

That is actually pretty close to my thought on this question, Misty.MistyCaldwell wrote:If anarchy is chaos; a society without rules for conduct (laws), then free will couldn't exist unless you either agreed with everything another person could/would do to your person or never came into contact with another human being.
I held off on posting my own thoughts just to see what others might write.
human nature subscribes toward desiring the establishment of some form of group society and rules. Rules and laws, while allowing a measure of certainty against the chaos of a true anarchy, eliminate a measure of free will by dictating how the individual views their will in the context of the society (i.e. status).

Rules, laws, societies...they are created only by those who strive for power over others. Those who follow rules, laws, society, they do so either because they lack power and need protection, or they lack opinions and ideals of their own so they subscribe to the "intelligence" of others.earthcurrent wrote:That is actually pretty close to my thought on this question, Misty.MistyCaldwell wrote:If anarchy is chaos; a society without rules for conduct (laws), then free will couldn't exist unless you either agreed with everything another person could/would do to your person or never came into contact with another human being.

...not everyone wants and/or needs that. The only person who truly has free will is the one who has the most power and the most solid beliefs/opinions...everyone else is just deluding themselves as they follow the power and protection of others, sacrificing their own opinions and ideals for it.
I'm no weak lemming...are you?

You are practicing a false freewill. You have strayed from the course and are striving for pre Socratean principals mixing Thrasymachus' principals of the advantage of the stronger with existentialist views.
You do not have true freewill, you only practice freewill in bad faith. Rather than hiding this lack of freedom from yourself with ignorance, you choose to hide it with arrogance. The fact that you use arrogance to hide the truth from yourself sugggests you know of these shortcomings. So I pose to you, which is worse, to be unaware of your shortcomings and not try to improve yourself, or to be aware of what you lack and choose to ignore it?
No, you are no weak lemming, but you are a lemming none the less.
