Ditto. My sister and I call each other "dude" all the time. It's actually kind of funny.

Anyway, I've wondered a bit about that... I would lean toward the technical aspect being a major factor in it. Because as for fannishness and time put into a project, there are other fields that are just as involved on those two fronts. For example, as far as I've seen, the fanfiction arena is predominantly female. And that takes a lot of fannishness, and (if the story is long) a lot of time as well.

This is complete guessing: maybe there's a magnet factor going, too - people are often drawn in by people who are already in the community, or by the videos already out there.

On the record, although most anime fans I know come from this site/board, the other board I visited for a while was also predominantly male. Though then, that had a magnet effect - when I tried to start up topics about shoujo series, they tended to die from lack of interest.

*shrugs* I'd bet it's a combination of things.

My girifriend is a fanatical anime fan, and there's plenty female anime fans out here in St. Louis, so to me, it doesn't seem like there's more guys into anime atall.. it seems fairly equal. However, overall, I can see that more guys do like anime than girls.. most anime fans on the net I meet are guys. Computers are also definitely a guy thing. I don't know why... It's like cars... cars are a guy thing, even though I know some female mechanics.. I also know some female computer techs, so hey,t hey exist.

As for female AMV creators... I think it's just a matter of expression. A lot of girls, at least the ones I know, tend to be shy to express themselves (Which I'm not used to at all - my girlfriend is an artist and expresses herself very well.) - But almost every female AMV maker I've ever seen videos from are awesome. I can't think of a sing female made AMV that sucked right now... it's kind of nice. A lot of guys will pop out AMVs every week and be like "I RULE!" but their AMVs suck ass.

In closing.. I'd like to think that I'm more of a female type of AMV editor.. quality over quantity.. and I don't care what others think as long as my video expresses my thoughts and emotions properly. But now I'm getting into a totally different subject.

Ahhh, I was all ready to disprove you till I realized that you said "almost". Darn. ;) Maybe you're just checking out the good ones. Or possibly, being impressed that the maker is a girl makes the video seem more impressive...

Anyway, only guys use computers? Dude [gender-neutral "dude"], take a quick lap around a random anime fandom. The internet is FULL of screaming fangirls. You don't have to know anything about computers in order to use them; in many areas, they're as ubiquitous as TVs.

However, actually going through the trouble to do a relatively tech-intensive project like this is another matter.

Using the fanfic example...maybe it's just that girls in general tend to express themselves more through writing than visual like AMV's.

I do both..but I really like the video aspect of it since I can get my ideas of something across a bit stronger. We can all read something and in our minds visualize it..but it'll be a different vizualization for each person. With AMV's..you know that most are going to see what you do..not so in every case...but close.

Maybe it is the technical aspect that makes most females shy away from making videos...not me..to me it was a challenge..and I love a challenge 8)
Maybe it just takes us more adventurous female souls to step in and try our hand at AMV's....

May I suggest that all of the female AMV creators enter this year's AWA Master's contest? It's not a golf tournament :o (but you do have to qualify).

I don't know how it works out from year to year, but there were no women in the AWA 8 contest. Zero. Nada. And it doesn't have to be that way.

Nah, I don't really take gender into account on things.. I've just seen some fabulous female made AMVs. E's stuff is good. I particularly like her "At the End of the Day" video, which she doesn't seem to like herself. (But then again, artists are always critical of their own work.) I also really like Lady Brick's "Blossom's Lament" and Silver Moon's Book of Days video to Shamanic Princess. (I'm a sucker for Shamanic Princess vids, and I love Enya.. so there ya go! :P It's a win win vid for me! :) ) I haven't watched any of your stuff. I think I'll check 'em out, just to see if my theory on female creators holds true :P

I know, I've been going out with one for 6 years and try to make friends with as many of them as I possibly can. (They get a little freaked when they find out that I like bishonen/shonen ai stuff too (Not to say all female anime fans like that stuff, but... well.. all the ones I know do :P ) ;) I'm weird. )

Yes, I disprove that theory about all female AMVers being good. ;) But it doesn't shoot down your theory as such. According to most people I barely qualify as a girl anyway.

I think ladydx's observation has something to it too, definitely - though I don't like to draw big generalizations like "man = big technical guy with tools and stuff! woman = fuzzy nurturing communicator!" ...but that seems to be the trend. (Heck, I fall into that stereotype, I have to admit. I've been writing in some capacity most of my life, but I edit video like a preschooler.)

Hm. I probably had something useful to say, but it got away.

Yeah there are more women on the net. I just don't know why there aren't more here. Maybe I'm just a big computer anime nerd. I think most people I know would be shocked that I love anime and amvs as much as I do.

I don't know about why there aren't more of us, but I do know why I like making AMVs. It's an artistic way to express my love of anime and music. I think I am a technical person I memorize the strangest details, but I'm not like super-computer-literate. Programming classes scare the living daylights out of me. :D I only learn enough about the computer to do fun stuff like play video games and make AMVs. Not that I don't love my computer, just I feel it's like a tool, like a paintbrush that although you can create all different sorts of strokes you don't need to know them all in order to create art.
