There's nothing definite to say that will make a video good. Because it varies so damn much. One might say it's the replay value of the video but videos like A Total Waste and many comedic trailer videos would be kicked out right there. It's obviously not special effects because there are plenty of great videos out there without them. Expert timing isn't always the case as I've seen lots of drama videos that don't rely on that and get along just fine. So really I don't think there anything that would make a video good and hence nothing that you can catagorize all good videos to.

Simplicity is beauty...
Effects is Madness and beauty...
etc....
"what makes a good amv?" you say? My "original" thought was, if it earns over 290 opinions, it's good enough for me!!!!!!!!!!
But now, it's different.
Times are changing. The "current" mightiest amv doesn't even use our well-known/loved Adobe Premiere 6.X...
^_^
"What makes a good amv?" My answer is this...
An editor who refuses to quit despite the LARGEST hardships thrown at him/her. The editor who makes 100+ crappy 5hour stint videos and then suddenly out of nowhere hits with something legendary.... [yes, I know how this feels...]
It's not the program, as Koopiskeva says, it's the editor. What makes a good amv? The answer simply is, a good editor........

In other words...Kevin Caldwell Syndrome.SarahtheBoring wrote:Actually, technically speaking, if "good editor = good video," that means that everything they touch is golden. So it's not a case of just not releasing them. It's just that "XYZ did it, so it's automatically good."
Ah well, can't say I'm surprised. *wanders off singing "Cult of Personality"*

Speaking from a collective point of view, a good AMV is one that whores itself out to the tastes of its audience. I choose the collective point of view because to do otherwise would be to get bogged down in layers and layers of subjectivity. Example: I don't like flashy effects, everyone else does.

I disagree. You can keep working for as long as you want, against the largest obstacles, and you can still end up with something that isn't "good".OmniStrata wrote: "What makes a good amv?" My answer is this...

i made it a point NOT to see any of his videos, especaly that oh so talked about engel one.....i loath german music. i did however get to see one of his very first AMVs at AWA *corect me if im wrong Q, at least i think is was Q that showed it anyway* it was one he made using the two VCR method. to say the least, it looked like thos VCRs were under water before he ised them, but the video was simple and fun, bunny girls with guns and trendy 80s pop music. simple is superb.

Hmmm...good videos are so subjective. Normally, for me to enjoy it I have to be able to see a solid connection between the anime and music. Also, I dig lyric synch and I enjoy original concepts. Finally, having boobies and old school music doesn't hurt any. 8)

There was a scene in Ayn Rand's "The Fountainhead", I don't remember the exact quote so I'll have to paraphrase:Koopiskeva wrote:Nah.. they just don't release or finish them...SarahtheBoring wrote:So good editors are incapable of making bad videos, then?
Interesting...

A genius is someone who knows when he's producing junk...and has the good sense to throw it out.
The implication is that judgement - knowing good quality from bad - is more important than skills or ideas, although it's not bad to have those, too.
