Error in VDub: This AVI file doesn't have a movie data block

OK, I searched the forum and I didn't see anything on the guide so far about this. Flame if you like, I'll try to be as unstupid as I can.

I was trying to follow the exporting directions on the Guide. Exported in Huffyuv, just the video, so as to add the sound in VDub (editing in 24fps deinterlaced, that's probably stupid I guess, but too late now).

So I went into the tag editor, and changed the framerate to 23.976.

Then I tried opening the file in VirtualDub, but it refuses to open it with the error message as mentioned:

This AVI file doesn't have a movie data block (movi)!

It will open my source clips, but not this exported file.

Advice? Should I try exporting again? Or have I screwed up something along the way, maybe with the Huffyuv settings? I tried to follow everything to the letter, but these things happen I guess.

Ideas? Death threats? Thank you in advance.

but for the sake of argument, no, not that I can see; WMP says "Connecting..." permanently and then freezes.

Are you using an avs file to open it in Vdub?

Sounds like your video file is corrupt or something, I'd try exporting again.

Anyway, no, I was opening the AVI file directly in VDub.

And running a new test: I exported the project again in an entirely different codec, to see if I screwed up the Huffyuv settings. Before running it through abcAVI, it played in WMP, albeit about 1 frame per minute because the file was too big. Anyway, ran it through abcAVI to turn it to the proper framerate, and THEN VDub refused to open it.

Also, a much shorter clip I'd meant to stick on the beginning, after going through this same process, won't play in WMP even though it's small (8MB).

So I guess my screw-up lies in abcAVI. Which has to be done. Whew.

And let's get on that flaming, guys, you disappoint me.

Now it sounds like your problem is in abcAvi. I've never heard of this so I would recommend maybe don't even use it. There's a small utility you can get to change framerate called avifrate. I believe you can download it off of www.doom9.org

It's actually a bug that I know about and has happened to a few people when changing the frame rate tag on huffyuv files.

I think the newest abcavi editor doesnt have this problem but I'm currently testing programs to make sure this doesnt appear in the next amvapp release.

Meanwhile, you'll need to re-export your avi file and use the avifrate program from doom9 as mentioned above.
