Actually it does depend on the individual as weel, there can be an odd effect from having an extra X chromosome, i think sterility is one nasty one if I recall correctly. It isnt good to have a third sex chromosome in any situation, considering that theres a reason we only have 2. But like I said, it really does depend on the persons exact genetic composition, what alelles are active, which are dormant, etc etc. I wouldnt panic, Lyrs, if you havnt noticed any freaky physical or mental abnormalities (i say freaky meaning out of the ordinary, not circus-bizarre0freakshow type freaky) chances are you're fine. But earthcurrent is right, serial killers, rapists etc have been reported to have extra chromosomes.SSJVegita0609 wrote:You will have no phsyical difference from any other males, don't worry. All it really means is you've got an extra chromosome to spare, shouldn't have any phenotypic effects on you.

Probably one of these ones:rurouni_trelane wrote:So... what chromosome combination would a hermaphrodite have then?
XXX
XXY
XYY
YYY
X (also known as X0)
and in extreme cases, Y.
Anything out of the ordinary really. Thing is, it all depends on the EXACT arrangement of chromosomes and alleles that are activated. In Lyrs' case, I suspect that either the extra X is dormant, on doesnt have the right sequences activated. Therefore he'd be comparitively normal.

Re: Chromosomes
Ok, here's the info on XXY males....Lyrs wrote:I just got my chromosomes tests back and its quite amazing and very surprising. The report says that i am XXY. that's not normal, i think, because most people either have XX or XY.
If you're wondering what the Y is, it's a small y-shaped chromosome that is present in all males, it's what tells the cells to develope human male organs.
And no Rachel, don't even think about what ever you were goign to say cause the Y doesn't matter in my case. The extra information, my doctor tells me, comes from a problem during metaphase which did not fully seperate.
The doc says Y chromosomes in girls as well as boys is more comom then most people think. and the presence of the y chromosome in a girl may result in her having different eye colors in each eye.
So, i'm wondering if you guys have had your chromosomes done and what are they.

XXY males exibit what is called Kleinefler's (sp?) syndrome. Genetically the subject is male however he is sterile and will exibit some female charactaristics (sometimes breast growth is included)
Yes everybody technically does have Ys but it is the proportion that counts and the activation of the SrY and SxL gene. If your doctor said you are XXY then that means you do have Kleinefler's syndrome and it is not normal.
The following are associated with XXY
If you want more information I suggest you visit this siteinfertility
incomplete masculinization; feminine, or pear shaped, body and body hair distribution
decreased libido
altered brain structure
osteoporosis
taurodontism
venous disease
learning, emotional, and mental disorders
autoimmune disorders such as lupus
low energy
low self esteem
communication difficulties, especially with expressive language
frustration-based outbursts
motor skill issues
developmental delays

It's actually a fairly commen genetic disorder in males (relatively speaking)
So there's your actual answer

WiredKnight is bang on the buck with that right there. I didn't have any hard evidence apart from whats in my own head to back up any statement I made, but he is quite correct. Kleineflers syndrome is not normal, and you do have it Lyrs. But that doesnt make you a freak (i sound like im giving a self esteem speech!) however, it may present you with some problems later on in life.

I don't have the time to correct all of the misinformation in this thread, but here's what I consider important:
The Y chromosome is NOT shaped like the letter Y.
The 23rd chromosome pair is the one that produces Down's Syndrome if you have the wrong number. Gender is (I think) either the 24th or 26th pair.
Having no Y chromosome results in death. The human body cannot survive without X chromosomes.
Females do NOT have ANY Y chromosomes unless they have Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome, in which case they are actually genetically males (but sterile with female parts)
Hermaphrodites have Mosaic somethingorother, which means that half of their cells have a male genotype and half of their cells have a female genotype. This is cased by an error in cell replication.

Actually, What everyone has is the X. That's why normal females are XX.Wired Knight wrote:Yes everybody technically does have Ys but it is the proportion that counts and the activation of the SrY and SxL gene. Also, I believe the criminal tendencies are more associated with XYY. However, this does NOT mean that IF you have XYY you'll be a criminal.
I like bugging people. Deal with it.
