Well the fact that its black powder and all would make getting ammo for it troublesome at least but if you need a badass gun.......Btw just so everyone knows soldiers in the civil war often armed themselves with such pistols as side arms but found during the marches and in combat situations they were impractical so they discarded them or sold them dirt cheap. Pistols are great personal protection but not much good in actual combat.

I'm sure it's a quirky gun to use. But it sure looks like a kickass gun and if confederate generals trusted it must be one.

are there any guns that have motors to spin the barrel of the gun?

your thinking of gatling guns or mini guns right? i can't remember what the name of the gun is, but it's usualy mounted on helicopters, m-134 or something like that. It fires at 10 000 rounds per minuite. it currently holds the world record for the fastest machine gun. it has 3 barels which are spun really fast and a bullet is fired through each barrel when it' slined up with the chamber. A very fast gun once it gets it's self up to speed. if it werent for the multiple barrels then the gun would melt it's barrel pretty quickly, and you wouldn't be able to get much use out of the gun before you'd have to stop and let it cool off.

Now, i don't know an awful lot about heavy weaponry liek miniguns, but i think that most of what i said should be right.

Miniguns are the only ones that use motors to spin the barrels. It takes a fair amount of energy to keep the rotation up - energy that only a vehicle like a Humvee or aircraft can produce enough of. This is just one of the many factors that will keep an infantry style minigun from ever seeing the light of day. Other factors:

1. Miniguns in general are heavy. The motor and heavy barrels (to prevent warping from overheating) add a lot of weight.

2. A soldier would have to carry a lot of ammo to make the minigun's high rate of fire worth it. Ammo isn't light.

3. Where's the energy source? You'd need something that can produce the power equivalent of three diesel truck batteries, at least.

4. The recoil would be tremendous, and probably render the weapon worthless. Additionally, friendly fire incidents would probably increase.

So no miniguns at the squad level. As for single barrel weapons like the M60 and M249 SAW, these operate by capturing some of the excess blown back gas generated from the powder explosion in the cartridge, and using it to operate the firing and loading mechanisms (almost like wind in a sail). No motors involved. This is, of course, a simplified explanation.

It should be noted that semi and fully automatic rifles utilize the same concept - gas sends the bolt back, the bolt ejects the empty casing, and then the bolt grabs and chambers another round as it returns forward.
I'm out...

The guns designed by Mr Gatling were hand cranked and they still threw out 800 rounds a minute. Custer had some he could have taken with him! but nah.
