Re: The ethics of adding credits
Just do it I say... Also, stop thinking ur video is GOING TO suck... You should see my first four, er 5... [shudders in torment and terror]SarahtheBoring wrote:Okay, I didn't see anything like this in the archives, so:
I know everyone who gets thanked on a cool video must be thrilled. But what does the general populace think about credit/thanking screens on average or sub-average videos?
I'm getting close to finishing one of mine, and I honestly really appreciate it any time someone helps me out with technical questions on the forums and whatnot. I think it's great that people will spend the time to help out those of us who are terminally confused.
But then, I thought, it might be embarrassing to be name-checked in a sub-average video. (It's not like anybody's gonna run up to you yelling "OMG OMG you were thanked in [video] you're awesome!!!!" for this one.)
S'like, it's a conflict between wanting to salute people nice enough to lend a hand to the newbs or the *cough* editing-impaired, and not wanting to embarrass them by being associated with the subpar videos they make.
Thoughts? Is it best to just message everyone who I think has been a help and ask them? I hate to put them on the spot.
(I'm sorry if this isn't the right forum.)
Thanks.
You will get better, that is if you THINK you can improve... And feel free to thank me for that line of advice...

Nononononoooo, not from you! You're the one who was cheering when people quit! I looked to you for the truth on what vet'rins in the AMVing world really think about shitty newbs! Awww, I feel so betrayed.
Unless that was sarcasm, in which case, cool.
Anyway, those last two messages have me confused.
Do it, but don't do it. Well, anyway.
Fact: I make crap videos. I have grown to accept that. Each one is slightly less horrid than the last, but they're still crap. (See, you said yourself that you were great after 5 videos. This one right now? #5. Still crap.) I have fun with them, but that doesn't change the fact that they suck like an Electrolux. I've accepted that and move on, having fun with them but trying not to bother people too much with their suckiness. (I don't try and get them into cons, blah blah.)
I think I'll anonymously thank people who lend assistance to the clueless in the video info. Because really, that covers even more people and is less embarrassing. So ALL SORTS of folks get to feel all noble and such, and nobody gets their name shackled to a cruddy video. Everyone wins. 8)

I put my thanks in the video profile.
And Sarah, will you ever believe it when someone says your vids don't suck? And even venture to say that they *gasp* are good? Or, at least, one or two are good.
Well, can they at least say that they liked it?

Flint? You're the only one who says that. I know what's out there. I know good from bad. This isn't good. "Sea" had a good song and pretty visuals, but none of that was my doing, and nowadays that's just not enough. The others are disposable.
So ... especially considering that you were name-checked in the credits of "Euphoria", for crying out loud - please stop condescending to the newb. I'm really kind of tired of being patted on the head and told that it's just great that I can almost color in the lines now.
I realize it's well-intentioned, but still.

Sarah, I've never even seen your videos, so I have no idea if they're crap or not--but you know I think you r00lz anyway. ^_^
My stance (from the position of having completed one video, worship me) is to thank people who have helped me in small ways and let them know how much I appreciate it. If someone's helped in a bigger way, like my friend Val did with the concepts behind my one (1) video, I give them credit for...guess what...the concept. But it does depend on the individual schna.
I make this sound so much more hypothetical/generalized than it is. I've done one video. N00b here.
I get rambly after midnight. Bah. And this is my first post even. Uh...I'll stop now.

Arg, see, that's the problem. People assume I make good videos because I talk so much on the forums. That's so not true it isn't even funny. Writing is my #1 hobby in terms of how long I've been doing it and how much practice I've gotten. AMVing is like #5. I come across as better than I am because of that. One is not a reflection of the other. At all. >_<Jainako wrote:Sarah, I've never even seen your videos, so I have no idea if they're crap or not--but you know I think you r00lz anyway. ^_^
Makes sense - I'd do that if people helping me were friends of mine.My stance (from the position of having completed one video, worship me) is to thank people who have helped me in small ways and let them know how much I appreciate it. Oh, no, you misunderstood me--or I didn't make myself clear. o_O Your videos could be crap! I know if I'd done mine two years ago it definitely would've been, instead of maybe is. I'm just saying you yourself are `kewl' despite it. ^_^v The ramblings of an insomniac are a dangerous thing.SarahtheBoring wrote:Arg, see, that's the problem. Ah, I see! In that case, I'd just thank them individually and inquire as to how they feel abuot credit-thanks.Makes sense - I'd do that if people helping me were friends of mine. But they're members here, with more status than I've got. I'm afraid of embarrassing them, and thus discouraging people from helping others again.

I think the whole 'status' thing is overrated, but that's an entirely different subject that has been discussed to death. I would figure that anyone willing to help out would be pleased to be thanked and appreciate the thought- and most people who would take the time to try and help out wouldn't be discouraged if someone made the all-time worst ever AMV but thanked them for their help. I know I wouldn't. Still, it's impossible to know how everyone will react, so asking them beforehand probably is a prudent thing to do...SarahtheBoring wrote: Makes sense - I'd do that if people helping me were friends of mine. But they're members here, with more status than I've got.
