The ethics of adding credits

Post by SarahtheBoring » Fri Apr 04, 2003 12:51 pm

Okay, I didn't see anything like this in the archives, so:

I know everyone who gets thanked on a cool video must be thrilled. But what does the general populace think about credit/thanking screens on average or sub-average videos?

I'm getting close to finishing one of mine, and I honestly really appreciate it any time someone helps me out with technical questions on the forums and whatnot. I think it's great that people will spend the time to help out those of us who are terminally confused.

But then, I thought, it might be embarrassing to be name-checked in a sub-average video. (It's not like anybody's gonna run up to you yelling "OMG OMG you were thanked in [video] you're awesome!!!!" for this one.)

S'like, it's a conflict between wanting to salute people nice enough to lend a hand to the newbs or the *cough* editing-impaired, and not wanting to embarrass them by being associated with the subpar videos they make.

Thoughts? Is it best to just message everyone who I think has been a help and ask them? I hate to put them on the spot.

(I'm sorry if this isn't the right forum.)

Thanks.

Hey, if this vid is better than the last, I think it would be great to acknowledge those who helped.

But what do I know, I've only made 1 vid, the rest is stuff for MI:1 and MI:2

Give Credit where credit is due. But I would send it to the people you plan to put in the credits and see if they want their names attached to it first. Ya know what I mean?

I agree, I think if someone feels they need to give someone credit, then they should ask before just doing it.

Yeah... it makes sense. Thanks.

I just know that if somebody asked me that, I'd feel guilty if I said no. ("Man, this sucks...but I don't want to be rude and tell them it sucks...") But that is the most fair thing to do.

Maybe I'll leave the thanks out altogether or just say something like "thanks to all who give assistance to the newbs." :P

I don't like putting any credits on the video file itself, but I always try to thank people in my liner notes, though.

Adding credits is generally a good idea. I wonder if MLA rules apply to amvs? (rhetorical ?)

I think credits are just fine no matter the quality of the video; really though it should only exist to give credit to people who participated in its making. I tend to leave my thanks in the video profiles though.

True true. I was thinking about that instead, putting that stuff in the video profile, but then... though it makes the video file less cluttered, and that's great, it's STILL damning the people who are thanked by sticking their names in the vicinity of a crappy video.

I think I'll just go with nothing in the file, and a "Thanks to all who helped, I won't embarrass you by naming names" note in the video info.

I am learning! ;)

I've seen a few videos that did that, and I actually liked it. I thought it was a nice, personal touch. Very warm and fuzzy and crap like that. Personally, I vote that if you want to say thank you to someone for their help, do it in whatever way that you feel is appropriate. Profile info, video credits, PM or E-Mail them, whatever. A thank you is a way of extending appreciation. Do it however you feel works best.
