What's 'too graphic?'

Post by Geirr » Wed Apr 02, 2003 4:24 pm

I recently made an AMV using footage of 'The Hakkenden' to the 'Conan' movie opening;
the music from a rather gory and sword blad-y movie, set to a story in the gory and slicy
civil war period of Japan. If you know the Hakkenden anime, there's quite a bit of general
mayhem available. My AMV includes SHORT subsections (i.e, sped-up, less than 1 sec.)
of when the dog Yasafusa drags in the Anzai warlord's severed head, and also of
Tamazusa getting beheaded.

Personally, I'm a but squeamish about detailed, drawn-out mutilation, or stuff getting poked
into eyes, but I find these two scenes just part of the shock/action of the AMV, yet not gratuitous.

I'd say (IMHO) that it's no worse than the original Kenshin or 'X' videos, where
unfortunate folks often find their heads lopped off, or a katana stuck through the back
of the neck and twisted. My AMV does have other general hacky-slashy stuff, but so
does the village raid in the 'Conan' movie opening (and they also have mastiffs chewing
up on villagers, too.)

I showed it to a group of about 30 anime fans, and although I heard one sharp inhale
of breath during the once scene, on the whole things seemed rather positively received.

Since I am a newbie to uploading AMV's here, I'd rather not become insta-TOAST over
this one work.

Opinions of the forum?

Just warn people of how graphic it is, the board houses AMVs for all ages so just make sure you properly warn them of how much blood and gore is in your video. There is no cap on how much you can have.

True, there's no limit to the bloodiness of AMVs listed here and hosted elsewhere. However what may be at stake here is a decision to upload this work to the Donut/Carrot, where there is an explicit ban on "excessive graphic violence". Unfortunately, there isn't a similarly explicit definition of this term.

As little as this is, though, you'd probably be all right. However, I have a stronger stomach than others (saw Faces of Death -- found it weak -- made something more extreme), so your best chance is probably to bring this thread to Phade's attention and ask him if posting such a video would get you banned.

The intention of the sex/violence ban penalties is really just to discourage people from using the service to surreptitiously host porn and snuff; as long as you ask first you aren't going to get slapped with anything.
