hmmm my personal favorite is Akira, it's pretty good.... Vampire Hunter D is pretty good as well but i havn't seen the sequal to it yet, Roujin Z (everybody i know thinks it sucks but i love it to death), Armitage the III Dual Matrix, Sin, the Tenchi Muyo movies rock... the Kenshin movie is pretty good too.... i think there are a few Ranma 1/2 movies as well, i havn't seen them but the Ranma 1/2 series rocks so the movies should follow suit....

My favorite anime movie is probably Grave of the Fireflies. I don't know if you mean "typical" anime movie in that it has action and fantastic stories. Grave of the Fireflies has neither. It is the story of two children during WWII in Japan and is probably the saddest thing I have ever seen.

If you want a typical great anime movie, I'd suggest Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust and so on.

Movies in english? As in...english subtitles or english released or...(gasp) dubbed? Argh!

I suggest Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service and/or Lauputa: Castle in the Sky, due out in a couple of weeks.

I am not affiliated with Studio Ghibli or Disney in any way.

If those aren't your cup of tea, you can't go wrong with Jin-Roh, Akira or Metropolis (well, you could, but everyone has their own opinions).

Bah, I was choosing stuff that was out :-P. If you put it that way I'd definitely add Laputa as well. Too bad Nausicaa isn't out because I would strongly recommend that :).

I generaly prefer movies to series for 2 reasons.

1. Since they have an hour and a half, filler is nowhere to be seen.

2. The budgets are higher so the animation is going to be better than anything you'll see on TV.

Now for my list

Grave of the fire flies
Metropolis
Akira
Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust (best animation ever)
Spriggan
Escaflowne the movie (Better than the series.)
