Kitsune is from southern japan. They thought it'd be cute to translate over the accent differences between the characters as well. It sounds like a good idea by all means, but it didnt really work in practice -_-SS5_Majin_Bebi wrote:Kitsune sounds downright APALLING!! And whats with the accent?

Re: Love Hina English Dub
That's what I thought at first when I watched it. But since I am familiar with all of their previous works in others series, the hilarity comes from hearing how they perform because they wind up creating inflections and vocal changes they rarely get to do in other shows - strictly because of the characters' personalities they have to play.SS5_Majin_Bebi wrote:Let me start by saying...*yergggh*
I bought Love Hina DVD's 1 and 2 yesterday. When I got home, i put them on (as you do...) and started watching them in english. I got maybe...mmm 5 seconds into it and thought "WTF? These sound like fucking sailor moon dubs!!" so I enabled the Japanese soundtrack. Kept watching it. Every now and then I switched over to make a comparison. This is my professional opinion.
Ahem.
None of the voices fit. They just don't sound right! Kaolla sounds too old and too...indian cliched if you get me. Kitsune sounds downright APALLING!! And whats with the accent? Motoko sounds wrong, Shinobu sounds worse, Keitaro sounds really really......just wrong!! And Mutsumi? All I could think was....WTF??
AND THEY ALL SOUND AS IF THEY ARE READING FROM A SCRIPT! A REALLY BADLY WRITTEN ONE!!
Who agrees with me?
Dorothy Melendrez as Naru Narusegawa doesn't quite fit right - she sounds better suited for older characters and yet her portrayal of Kris Kristopher in Battle Athletes was wonderful.
Ellen Arden as Shinobu Maehara was pretty good, sweet and innocent.
Mona Marshall as Motoko Aoyama is just too masculine, of course that's probably why she sounds perfect for Ran in Tsukikage Ran. At least the character fits her voice.
Wendee Lee as Kaolla Su & Tama ; Barbara Goodson as Mitsune Konno
were both totally miscast - the voices they decided to use were wrong anyway.
Finally, David Umansky as Keitaro Urashima was a pleasant surprise. I always laughed when I hear him speak because he sounds just whinny enough for the character. He even handled getting his ass kicked alot by Naru flawlessly. I simply loved those inflections he does.
I also have to say that the overall script was not completely off from the original but they still maintained the spirit of the show. I loved it!!

I think somebody mentioned it already, but Kitsune (Mitsune, whatever) is from southern Japan and therefore has a southern dialect. I think I've been checked on this once before that Japan really doesn't have different accents. Note: I didn't say accent. I said dialect. There's a difference. I won't go into detail on all the characters, but what it sounded like to me is that they decided to take all the characters' personalities and over exagerrate them. Case and point, Keitaro is supposed to be a dork. Any one who's read the manga knows that, but... HOLY CRAP! They made 'em out to be as bad as Steve Urkel(that's some old school stuff right thereSS5_Majin_Bebi wrote:None of the voices fit. They just don't sound right! Needless to say, I was too thrilled about it. Especially since I absolutely LOVE the manga. (update for anyone who cares, Vol 10 due in May!!)

Well, i still am never going to put myself through the torture of watching english-dubbed Love Hina ever again. The guy that does Keitaro's voice in the Japanese dub can pull off so many more sounds than the American guy, so much easier too. I mean, the scene where Mutsumi kisses Narusegawa is a perfect example. In the original japanese dub it sounds something akin to this.....actually its impossible to type. It has me in stitches EVERY TIME. In english, i have to fight the urge to snap the DVD in half. And as for Kitsune's english voice, its a STEREOTYPICAL voice. They have her portrayed as a southern slut! Ok, so the character is a little more promiscuous than any of her companions, but its needless and excessive! And it just sounds bad. And yes, I picked up on the dialect differences, so I know she is from a different region of Japan. Seeing as this is the case, the American voice directors would have been better off changing her speech patterns, not her accent. Using different slang wouldve worked better.
The Love Hina english dub is as bad as the Canadian dub of Dragonball Z. It sucks. Single charaters may sound good (Shinobu sounds alright) but as a whole, the thing just doesnt work in favour of the anime at all. It ruins the experience. And to say that American voice actors can put more emotion into it? I've only ever heard a handful that can beat the Japanese.

I saw the dub when I first got the DVD, look in history to see my rant there.
Kitsume's accent I don't mind, actually I would even think it was cute had they not anal fucked the script.
I mean can't they just redraw the mouth movents rather just make up any random nonsense that would almost fit the mouth movements. Its an ettichy comedy leave it the fuck alone if it's perverted.
He looked up her skirt, thats why she hit him, and when he was clobbered all he could think of saying was pink.. HE DID NOT EXCLAIM OF THE WONDERS OF FINALLY HOLDING A GIRLS HAND!!!
Yer, i might of been able to live with the dub if it hadn't rewritten the script with a chainsaw and a crayon.

Whilst reading Dr Seuss and taking 7 different types of LSD. They always anally rape the scripts and leave them to bleed in english dubs though dont they?skanks wrote:I saw the dub when I first got the DVD, look in history to see my rant there.

And I am not surprised at all that its the same crew who voiced Sailor Moon. In my original post I actually said "geez, that sounds like sailor moon!" and I fucking HATE sailor moon. Sailor moon can suck my big fat cock until shes blue in the fucking face.
Nuff said.
