Evangelion: Classic or Overrated?

While Evangelion may just be about a boy, I think the story of Angels and Mecha etc... is being understated. If it were about a boy growing up learning to play baseball it would have been a totally different anime. I just think it's unfair to sort of throw away the story.

Well I think you misunderstand. The story isn't being thrown out, but I feel the primary purpose of the entire anime is the characters and not the story. The story is cool and nice to analyze and figure out, but it isn't foundation of which Eva was created for. Anno just needed some story to say what he wanted about us as humans. He chose mecha, etc. and made an intriguing story, but it's not as important as the people in the story.

i was led to believe that anno choose the great big mecha theme because it was popular at the time in japan, so it was bound to get the attetion of people. Besides on that note, are the eva's trully mecha, i would have thought they were more like cyborgs or something, think about it from the opinion that the eva's are sentient beings (unit 01 makes its own descisions several times)

can someone put me out? im in a lot of pain right now

I still say that Eva is like Huck Finn. There's more than a few connections between teh two.

Both Ending sucked.
Both protagonist stopped growing way before the end.
Both had abusive fathers.
Both lost their moms.

But there's also other stuff that makes them different, but Huck Finn = Eva.

damn you dwchang, here i am on fire, and you don't even remember when you torched me, well it was in the escaflowne thread, just after i said the dragon form was drawn my a demented 5 year old.

back to the point, something just occured to me, in unit 01, shinji's mum was there. In unit 02, asuka mum was there, what the hell hapened with rei???? how did yui ikari soul manage to be in two places at once (unit 01 and Rei) some enlightenment please.
As to being a classic, no it cant. No anime where peoples clothes magicaly change when were not looking should be an classic (think to shinji dissapearing in unit 01, and ritsuko's amazing quick change in episode 1, swimsuit to uniform in the time it takes a lift to reach its destination.

I loved EVA.

I don't begrudge anyone their opinion. But I feel sorry for those who didn't understand it. It is one of the best plotlines I've ever seen.

ah , has anyone read the manga, ive got up to book seven part 1(that was all we got before viz cocked up) and thought it was brilliant. Maybe they should redo eva, and let Toji die, this allows for some brilliant character developement for shinji (especialy the part where he trie to hit Gendo, Why Kaji Why did you ever stop him????) and on this topic, does anyone know the answers to these questions (im to lazy to leave this site to look for myself)

1.) how many TP is the manga gona be?
2.) When is Viz gona bull its thumb out of its arse, and start distributing in the uk again???
