I loved the lion king.
And on-topic, here's something a friend of mine did to mess around...

I like bugging people. Deal with it.

War is hell...
I missed the Simpsons cause of it... and now this!
As someone already pointed out, the war was the reason why his substitute wasn't able to make the ceremony. The main reason why Miyazaki wasn't at the ceremony was because he's currently busy working on Howl's Moving Castle.

Actually a lot of people got their award accepted by the academy. Academy Awards aren't really that big when you think about it. Who cares if a buncha Hollywood money-grubbing egotistical people like it. People's Choice-type awards are always really what's going to matter.

Besides, I couldn't picture an Oscar sitting on Miyazaki's desk. I'll bet he'll put it away to storage and it'll never be seen again.

Actually, a lot of people see to care if a movie has won an academy award. Harvey and Bob Weinstein (Miramax) push their movies hard to win academy awards because it means that they can put nice little labels on their movies which say, "Oscar Winner For Best Picture" and "7 Academy Awards Won" And believe it or not, those labels sell movies because people want to see the movie that won such a prestigous award.

And, the Oscars have become a cultural thing as well. People even throw oscar parties. (I even went to one.) As for people's choice awards, those don't even need to be held, there are box office sales charts. Movies are really voted on all the time, not with a ballot box, but with a wallet. ;)

hate to break it to you, but disney hasn't offered anything BUT crap for the past 10 ro 20 years. Pixar is picking up where Walt left off (and Don bluth had a handful of films that shame disney.) . Lilo and stitch is probably the best anyone is ever going to get from disney.

The people's choice: Madonna? Or Britney? Or...?

On topic...It's nice that Spirited Away won. At least it means that many "connected" Hollywood types watched some anime, maybe for the first time in their lives. However, I get the impression that - except for profits to Tokuma - Miyazaki could not care less about what happens on this side of the Pacific.

I totally disagree, Disney had a good stretch in the early 90s, as for what they are releasing lately I would agree with you... Pixar, is okay. But 3/4 isn't a true testimate that they are the 2nd coming.

disney has gone to hell. The quality of their animation is going downhill. They stopped caring about the quality of their stories alltogether and then there is the matter of all that 'stuff' they hide in their movies.
