UTC - Ugly Cosplayer Theory

Post by Zarxrax » Thu Mar 20, 2003 12:41 pm

For ages it has perplexed man as to just why god-awful ugly people cosplay. I mean, in full clothing they are a sight for sore eyes, but in skimpy, tight, hardly there anime clothing? Argh! Poke my eyes out!
I believe I may be on to something, however. These people are ugly. Therefore they likely have low self esteem. Therefore, they probably secretly desire to look like a hot supermodel (the females at least, if a guy desires to look like that, then we have more serious problems). Now, these are anime fans. So just who are the hot supermodels that they look up to? Thats right, anime characters. Therefore, in an attempt to try looking hot, and feel sexy, they dress up as their favorite character. Unbeknownst to them, they look ANYTHING BUT sexy.
This theory can also go apply towards why guys cross-cosplay as female characters. These guys have a secret desire to be gay, and take it up the ass. However, they are too embarrassed to admit it. Therefore, they cross-dress in hopes of feeling what its like to be on the other side of the fence, all in the safety of an anime convention, where that sort of behavior is tolorated.
So am I right on the money with this theory?

I don't know what's wrong with you. I have seen cos-players of all ages and multiple levels of pulchritude.

Sure I have seen 300 pound Sailor Moons and Men dressed as Chun Li... but here's the thing...

Cos Play is not an anime thing. Star Trek conventions have people who dress up... comic book conventions have people who dress up. Some people just enjoy dressing up as the characters they like.

Conventions are a place where people who have an interest can find others who have a similar interest. I have met plenty of cos-players who dress up as characters just because they love anime that much, not because they have any desire to actually be the characters they are dressing up as. They're having fun... just as many of us might have fun at a halloween party. We dress up as a character to have fun and then we discard the character later on.

I mean... look at all the sub groups in anime... there are the cos-players and the AMV makers and the karaoke people and the video game players and the DDR crowd...

People have their interests and they seek out those with similar interests. I know some cos-players take incredible pride in the effort it took them to make the costume and then must brave the judgements of EVERYONE at the con as they walk about the con in their creation.

AMV makers only have their AMVs shown at the AMV contest... so the people who are watching the AMVs at least have some interest in AMVs.

None the less... I think your comments, while accurately capturing the truth of a few cos-playters, are needlessly hostile. Just because someone is ugly and cos-plays doesn't instantly make this view of yours true. Hell... I met this one girl who was trapped in a wheel chair and she was dressed up as Sailor Moon... she did have low self-esteem and this made her shy. By dressing up, she was able to cross the shyness and people came to her and it helped make her first convention experience a great success. She never aspired to be Sailor Moon... she just wanted to make new friends.

Your attitudes toward homosexuality are also rather repugnent, but not a shock given the shallow nature of your viewpoints.

Anyway... these are my thoughts on your so-called theory.

PS - I don't cos play and have no interest in cos playing even though I certainly am impressed with efforts by some cos players.
There are two kinds of people in this world:
Those who divide people into two kinds of groups
and those who don't.

They may be ugly, but they are having fun. If you don't like it, just avert your eyes. Yeah, I know about the whole train wreck theory, but with have enough willpower, you'll be fine.
