Evangelion: Classic or Overrated?
I had just finished watching Evangelion. Everything but the hentai "ep." After watching the whole thing. I have come to a conclusion. I am not here to bash, troll, or degrade this show. Just an opinion. I know my tastes are odd sometimes even the center of controversy with my friends (example: The first few eps of the Overfiend had a plot that I liked. It would have been so much better if they just took out the tentacle stuff and focused on it.) That being said I hafta say that I was very, very disappointed in the show. I was told it was a beautiful show but the ending may throw you. That was an understatement. I have watched "Lain." I have watched various movies from David Lynch and Clive Barker. I have watched them and sat down to read the paper. Evangelion, however, made want to do something that I vowed never to do. That would be to go "a'tokin`." I get the concept. I understand the plot. I am glad that it wasn't the run of the mill "Giant Robots to save humanity vs evil space aliens" genre. I am glad that it challenged my preconceptions. However, I hafta admit I would love to put it on my shelf and never watch it again. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. The first 20 eps had my attention, then the abstract started in.
If anyone here hasn't seen it, just understand that I am probably in the minority but go and watch something else. if you only have seen AMV's of the show, don't be fooled. If you don't mind complex anime. Anime that isn't cookie cutter, you will enjoy it. That being said, you may not like the ending.
I am sorry to come here and start critcizing one of the most popular and most touted animes of all time. Just understand that watching "Evangelion," I cannot give it "Classic" status. I won't express my complete feelings since I want this to be a civil debate.

I liked it. It was a sort of Fuck You to the rest of the world. Noone liked him so why bother? I would have done the same thing in his shoes. Well first I would have given them the chance to grovel at my feet and ask nicely for me to please stop instrumentality.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

Upon further review...
I won't say that I changed my mind. I have read some of the literature that was web-based. After hearing what happened for both EoE and D&R, its sad that those had to be made to further the calling of Evangelion fans. EoE had better animation so it was a plus and seeing Asuka actually fight and not complain was pretty cool. However, I still think that having all of humanity being put into a miasmic state was a bit much.
Also, I remember that the last words from Asuka (via the dub-great when you can't watch the video and are doing dishes I might add) was "How Disgusting" as Shinji cried. I guess that Asuka was Asuka no matter what happened to her.
One more thing, I find it funny that Shinji comes back to "reality" and the first thing he does is try to choke Asuka. Something I wanted to do the moment I first saw her. :)

My feelings are also that it should be given the status of "classic", but I understand your feelings about the ending. For a long time I have studied Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Religion, and Classical Music and I have come to the conclusion that EVA probably the epitemy of Anime. It brings together the highest points of each genra and in the end you are left with how to interprite it's metaphysical aspects as wonderful or horrible, or disregard it as just a really fucked up story that carried the "mind fuck" concept way too far. Personally, I think it's the greatest thing ever "and it did want me to break out my bong".

I haven't gone *that* far into it, but I too have read some theories and formed my own. I like the show because it was open-ended enough that people can walk away with different meanings and things related to their own live. I know most people like it because it's cool mecha fighting, but I honestly think that the "story" (and Evas) was just a vehicle to do other things with. Don't get me wrong though, the story is quite amazing as well.Zarxrax wrote:I think its the greatest anime ever too
I devoted like years of my life to studying it... for realI would come in from school everyday and read various things on it, everything from the EVA mailing list to various research papers and reports on it :\
That's my two cents though...you're free to hate the show too
