Sony to release the PS3 by the end of 2003.... ?

Considering just a few weeks ago they said that 'Cell' isn't even finished, I find this hard to believe.

However, IF they've just been lying and Cell IS finished and ready to go, then this will essentially put a few nails in the coffin of X-Box and GC (who dont have plans for any next-gen consoles until at least 2005, giving PS3 a TWO-YEAR headstart).

Now, seeing as how this is being reported by Bloomberg (which is a very reliable and established news service, meaning it might as well have been reported by CNN), its kind of leaning me to believe that it's true, HOWEVER I'm betting that if it's released this year, that it won't be nearly as powerful as they were hyping it to be. Which would suck. Alot.

But hey. We'll see.

Unfortunately, the prospect of owning the new and latest tech toy is what got the PS2 into the position it's in today, so if the PS3 launches this soon, it will probably turn into another PS2, where almost every one who buys a PS3 will have to repair or replace it in a 6-month period.

Even more unfortunately is the amount of people who will buy it even if they know what will happen.

I still find it hard to believe. I just find it obnoxious how aggressive every company is taking their way of business with console gaming.

If it's backwards compadible, I don't care. I'll probably pick one up, abit, not during the rush. Prolly like a year after it comes out. hell, I just picked up a ps2 about 4 months ago.

Nah fuck that shit. The only reason they are rushing it is because they fear the xbox. Hell I remember them saying that in an interview, something along the lines of "Xbox is to much competition and we might have to force an early release of PS3 to keep up"

ya, the Playstation 2 and the XBOX are just too alike to really coexist. Nintendo has found a nice little niche in being known for a games-only console, whereas Sony and Microsoft are trying to appeal to the somewhat American idealisms by moving towards the "do-it-all" aspect. Somehow, I doubt that people will soon embrace the video game system as a standard household appliance.

Hmm, this is odd indeed. So far I've heard nothing about the release of the PS3 in 2003 (or even 2004 for that matter). I've heard 2005 from pretty much all my sources.

Of course, I've also become informed by some customers about a rumor flying around about a new Xbox system coming out this year, and there's been absolutely nothing on that.

I think any 2003 release dates for a new console by Sony, Microsoft, or even Nintendo (though I haven't heard any rumors dealing with them) are just rumors actually getting a look as possible truth. I don't expect to hear any solid release possibilties until late 2003/early 2004.

One of the biggest reasons I don't expect a super early pre-empt by any company (especially a pre-empt by a couple of years) is because everyone saw what happened with the Dreamcast. And I believe that everyone knows that, at least to a point, the Dreamcast coming out so early lead to its demise. And I really don't think any of the companies is going to be too quick to jump on the chance that just maybe the same thing will happen to them.

No offense, but Sony has nearly no reason to fear the Xbox (except possibly because it's doing better in sales than the GC). I'm not saying that because I live or die by Sony; I own all three systems, and like them all. I'm saying that because the sales tell the tale. Over the week of Christmas in the US there were more PS2's sold than there were Xbox's for the entire season. Also the trend has been that PS2 related materials (systems, games, etc.) outsell the Xbox on almost a 3:1 ratio. And then there's the fact that Xbox is doing near-dismally in Japan.
Fear is not an issue.
I'm not saying Xbox is doing poorly and there's no support for it, in fact it's doing quite well, not to mention better than the GC. It's just that the PS2 isn't in any danger of being toppled any time soon. The Xbox lineup of games for this year isn't helping it much either in the console wars, this could have been its year to take the top spot, but it seems to have slowed down in some respects rather than pick up. Worst of all, the Xbox's next ultimate killer-app, Halo 2, is officially being held off until 2004 (tentatively Feb 2004).

So yea, blahbiddy blah blah blah two cents...

Ironic to see the PS2 bury the X box after everyone else buried beta. I guess now they get to see what it's like flooding the market with a subpar product.
and about the PS3, there were some people that made parts for the PS2 who said "off the record" that they were going to be working on PS3 parts for a 2003 release, (or something like that) but when asked again, the company making hte parts, along with sony, denied the statement. Heard this whole thing on tech TV.
And BTW, the X box is goign to have three of the best games of all time, they just want to get it right. but once they are out sony will have nothing left.

Halo 2
Fable
Doom 3
Halo 2 and fable keep getting delayed because they want the games doen right. Once they come out, the effort is going to really come to shine. Anyone who has seen the screens and read the interviews will know what I'm talking about.
