Dub vs Sub

LOL!!! DUDE that's funny. I know a lot of people learn Japanese just for translation aspects, but I seriously want to learn it, because I enjoy learning foreign languages, I mean I've got some Spanish under my belt... didn't really like that though, got about 2 and a half years of it in High School. I'm workin' on French, and trying to find an outlet to Japanese, if we could only find a damn teacher. *shakes fist angrily* I've really developed an interest in foreign languages and customs. I'm considering majoring in journalism. Seeing as how those are all the things that interest me. Writing, travel, etc. The only part that sucks is climbing that stupid ladder of success so that I actually get to travel. *shrugs* Oh, well.

And from what I've seen there's more that 40... There are the common ones that this manual instructs in detail and about 20 or 30 more than that listed in the back of the book. That's not counting the " and the ○. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but so far this book seems to follow pretty well, discussing with some classmates who are half Japanese and half way speak it.

So 142 Hiragana katakana symbols...

It is dubs all the way for me. I like dubs, and ALOT of dubs that you people criticize are not nearly as bad as you make them out to be.

Though, now that we have DVDs, I watch the dub first, then I go back and watch the show in Japanese with subtitles.

Alot of time the japanese don't even bother to factor in accents. And alot of times a show will take place in a country where they speak another language but they have the peopel speak japanese anyways. But once the dubbers come along and translate it, they work in the accents and everything, all things being factored in, I would say that there are situations where the Japanese Dub would be subpar compared the English couterpart. (such as hellsing.) But other animes canoot be dubbed, unless they WANT to spend plenty of time editing what the people say and butcher the anime. (Azumanga Daioh.) But these facts aside, everything is left up the the dubbers and how well the dub is being done.
However, all things beign equal, I'd take the dub.

Ok I think its however you watch it first in a lot of cases.

some examples.

Slayers-This is one where the dub is just better than the original. Lisa ortiz is a way better Red head than megumi Hayshibara. I like the supporting cast in this one better too.

Star blazers-This one I can watch either way but I prefer the english voices.

Hellsing-100 trillion times better than the sub.

Love hina -The dub to this is from the bowels of el diablo.

Aoi yuri aoshi -Dear god kill the dub cast.

Kenshin-The sub is better in every way except for kenshin!! Hes sounds better in the dub more like a wuss less like a girl.

Outlaw star-Sub or dub but with a kick ass dub why bother with the sub?

Van dread- Ditas dub voice sucks so that kills this dub. Also pai way says something retarded instead of pai check.

Nadesico-This is one where I am convinced if I had saw it subbed first I would have liked the sub better but I didn't so the dub rules.

Hyper police- Dont get anywhere near the dub.

Ranma-Watch it subbed? What you talkin bout willis. No way this one I started watching dubbed and I'll finish it dubbed.

Steel Angel Kurumi- Dub is way better than the sub. Kirinka is played perfectly.

Oh my goddess the ova-Dub blows away the sub.

i havn't seen the english series yet, (i bought volume 6 off ebay and plan to collect them all) but i've heard voice clips of them

It depends really, domestic anime companies are starting to get better at choosing voice actors and it's slowly getting to the point that there are some really good dubs that are pretty faithful to the original Japanese. I really like how AD Vision is having Monica Rial do the soft-spoken characters like Hyatt from Excel Saga and Kirika from Noir recently. Whenever AD Vision decides to start dubbing Angelic Layer, I hope to God they cast her as Misaki, or at least Hatoko. Bandai is doing quite good dub work as well recently as the .hack//SIGN voice actors sounded just great. And it's sometimes quite funny/interesting to hear certain Japanese puns and jokes dubbed so that they make sense, yet still retain a semblence of their original meaning and match the lip-movement of the characters. Real good voice actors can improvise phrases that'll fit the bill.

Although I wholeheartedly agree that Dubs are getting better (even bearable for me), I still present my original point about original "vision" and casting. Regardless of if we think one sounds better than the other there is a "right" version according to the creator ne? Call me Elitist or whatever, but I like seeing things as close to the original idea as possible.

But this is from someone who watches dubs over subs. Of course you're going to say dubs are better, just as we are saying subs are better. To me I think 90% of dubs are unbearable. They sound so phony and cheezy. Most times this is to match the movements of the mouths. Also in most cases, they will cut dialogue solely to match mouth movements. In any case, I'm fairly sure we are criticizing the dubs because they really are that bad to us.

I can't even believe you said that. Megumi Hayashibara is one of the most talented voice actresses in Japan. She does an emotionless character like Rei and then a wacky character like Lina Inverse.

I guess I somewhat agree with that, but this is done on purpose. Himura Kenshin is supposed to sound very femine and gentle because it gives a good counter to his Battousai identity. I think the dub of Kenshin sounds the same for both personalities. He does sound more masculine, but Kenshin's character isn't supposed to be that. There is a reason why he has long red hair, a small body frame, etc. He is based on a real samurai (actually based on multiple samurais) during the Bakumatsu that apparently had red hair and was very femine (but I guess only the Japanese would know that stuff, but it was made for them

). Also, Kenshin's VA was a woman (like many other cases where a man is played by a woman).

Regardless though, as I said in the beginning, you're free to watch whatever you want. I'm just arguing from my pont
