Am I the only one getting sick of the AMV scene?

Post by OtakuOutpost » Fri Mar 14, 2003 6:25 pm

This has been building up for a while, but this site - and especially this forum - convinces me that more and more AMV creators are little more than whiners.

I remember the old days, when people were just cool. The people like Joe, Kevin, Hsien, Brad, Nic, Tim, and Vlad. Now it seems like the whole scene has been taken over by little kids and is overrun with perversion, ignorance, arrogance, and immaturity.

The more I read, the more depressed I become with the bickering, the arguments, and the holier than thou attitudes I see here. The AIM chat room is particularly bad.

This site is a great resource, but I miss the days when it was little more than a database of videos and links. Things on this site have become way too personal.

Specificaly, what brought on these feelings? What is the trigger event? This kind of idea has been kicked around a lot, but I think it's the basic idea of the scene these days, and you (as well as everyone else) have two options: Deal with it, or don't come to the forums. I know that sounds harsh, but the truth is that there is a very large comunity that doesn't hang out here, and they still make AMVs fine. Lots of people are saying goodbye to the forums, and I think it's a sensible and mature solution. Besides, really, what are you getting out of coming here? The contests have their gliches, but it's obviously markedly better than it is here. That said, you have those to attend, and that can fun and fine. You can use aim to talk to pretty much anyone you want these days, so why bother with the mindless masses? Deal with who you want to deal with, and put up with the minor squables at the contests, and that's the extent of the imaturity you are forced to deal with by being in the AMV scene. That's all.

I agree with Otaku Outpost... the AMV scene has degraded into.. just junk. You think the forum is bad, try going to the Chat room. <sighs>

What I find worse is it is slowly rolling over into the scene at the conventions as well. Then Anime has become more mainstream as well. <sigh>

Wait it out...

Are you trying to say that the forums are contributing to the population of the types you describe, or that it's just a reflection of the whole community?

It's nothing like this at cons in my opinion. So perhaps the negative light you are seeing is just a minority that shows up here. In fact, a great amount of creators don't really post here so maybe it's the fans of the hobby that make the fuss and not the creators?

I dunno, just trying to look at things in a positive way. I think that people are always the same, just when the population of anything grows, all the parts grow even if the percentages stay the same.

Yes, these 'problems' are the minority, but they're rather loud about it. And I think a few of them don't even make or watch AMVs. Maybe not even anime. I know Roke doesn't, he's made that clear a few times.

Klinky, screw elitism. Just forget about it. He's generally right, you know. The key difference, as I heard Koop mention, is just maturity. The AMV scene has gotten younger and the older and more mature creators didn't like it all that much. It's not about who's better than who.

I think a great deal of it has to do with the fact that people are hiding behind a keyboard and a monitor when interfacing with a forum.

A lot of it is just how I read people's coments, without the aid of seeing body language. A sentence can be misinterpreted when taken completely out of context and delivery.

A lot of people are a lot more rude when they have a separation between themselves and the people they are talking to than they would be face to face. Most of it is trained behavior - seeing how other people act in forums and learning what is acceptable and what is "cool".

At conventions there is a great deal of immaturity there as well, but that's what happens when you stick a bunch of 16 - 18 year old boys with out supervision in a room together.

There are a lot of people here that I do want to talk with. I like meeting new creators. This place is a good central location and I send people to this site quite often when they ask about AMVs.

I dunno what it is, but something about the community here makes me feel less than welcome.

Well yeah, I agree with you. But being uptight about a community going to shit just isn't productive IMO. I agree that some people could be a bit more mature, while I may come off as immature (incredibly) I am actually quite mature and friendly in real life. I can't exactly say what posesses me to let loose online, maybe it's the lack of retribution, or wanting to blow off daily steam, but whatever it is, I agree with Quu as most people are totally reasonable when you meet them in real life. If they're not being reasonable, Mr. Taser and Mr. Mace can help that.
