Dub vs Sub

i was browsing around my kazaa shared folder and looking at how much space i had dedicated to anime ... when i noticed that i had an english dubbed episode of evangelion. I had forgotten about that, and was curious how the characters sounded in english since i had forgotten, it was episodes 3-4, after watching another 22 episodes it's pretty easy to forget how they sound. Well, i have to say, the dubbed version of Evangelion sucked. For some reason the characters just sounded wrong, and even Rei sounded terrribly wrong, and i only heard one line from her.

Well the question i'm going to ask you is do you perfer the conveniance of having all your anime with english audio, or would you rather put up with reading all the lines with subtitles? I perfer watching subtitels, at least the voices sound liek they have more life. I know shinji is supposed to sound really depressed, but hell, not every one is supposed to sound as lifeless as him.

Learn japanese and watch it raw. You don't know how many times I've heard this sub vs. dub crap.

This is a touchy subject, but I am subs all the way. I agree that it sounds more "right." Basically, I like to see things in the "purist" form possible. Of course in this case raw is the best as SoapNinja mentions, but with what we're given and my language skills, this is the closest.

Basically for me, I like seeing and hearing things the way the director/creator originally intended since it is THEIR show. They obviously wanted people to sound a certain way (hence why they casted them) and in dubs the creator/director is not involved.

However, by no means does this mean anyone is right or wrong. Live and let live. At least people are watching anime right?

LOL that's funny... downloading everything has it's advantages, but.... You've got a point.

I actually have no preference. When I watch an anime I prefer to watch it in my own language so that I can pay attention to what's actually goin' on. After that I'll watch it with sub's to see what else I can get out of it.

And as far as Evangelion goes, I didn't think that the dub sounded THAT bad on it. You wanna hear a piss poor job of dubbing, go watch Love Hina. The script is HORRIBLE and the characters are over exaggerated. But then you have to think that when they dub things they have to bring a foreign culture to life in a form that we'll understand. A guy that sounds like a total geek may not sound the same as a geek here in America. So, while the Japanese voice actor may sound like a geek to Japanese people, we wouldn't be able to tell, therefore it may be necessary to change the voices... but still.... Love Hina was preeetttttyyyy exagerated.

i'm working on that ... soon as i had enough money i was planning on picking up the evangelion box set and freeing up 2 gigs on my HD. I'm not a total leech you know, if i find something i like on kazaa, i'll pay for it and get the full effect (dvd extras, CDbookelts and what not). Now dopn't go and spoil everythign for me by saying that the DVD extras for Evangelion aren't anything special! Id rather find out myself.

As for learning japanese and watching the raw anime, that probably isn't a bad idea, and i'd like to. But at the moment thats not really very fesable for me. But it still would be cool to learn japanese.

A friend and I are actually trying to learn it, but the university we attend doesn't offer Japanese. So we've bought a ton of software and do it yourself manuals. Surely out of all of those we can decipher what is halfway true and take it and run from there. We're workin' on the alphabet first, one of the three or four, i forget how many there are. Then we'll actually have to go and bitch to the language department so that we can get a class that can teach us how to speak it. Other than that, we're pretty much screwed.

Not to mention they gave Kitsune a Southern accent... WTF!
*flinches also to Su's dubbed voice*

Anyways I'm in love with the Japanese language so it's difficult to watch it not subtitled. After watching so much anime subbed it makes you a quicker reader too.

You may miss a bit of the action but it is tipically only in movies that it happens since in anime most of the animation is looped when characters talk. Until I learn Japanese and can watch raws I will always prefer subs.

I don't know how to scientifically explain this, but after awhile, you don't miss anything. For some reason I can see the subs and see what is going on at the same time...and no I don't have 4 eyes. I guess one could say the peripheral vision just gets used to it and lets you see everything and still read (shrug).
