Stress from school?

Post by Bushido Philosopher » Tue Mar 11, 2003 5:32 pm

Hye all. I was looking for a good place to survey people outside of school but who were in school and of course had stress that comes with it. So I thought, why not the .org? It's composed primarily of college and high school students.

So if you would be so kind as to answer the question below then I'd appreciate it. Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Do pressures from school (academic competition, pressure from parents/faculty, pier pressures, etc) have a negative effect on students' personality and daily activities, not just in the US but all over the world? And of course tell why you think that is.

I might as well answer my own question even though this is a poll.

Not that I go to a colleg prep magnet school so my views may be a little different than some people's. Pressures from school definitely have a great impact on students. We have had some kids who have committed suicide over their grades. In some countries competition is that fierce. Some peoples' personalities I've noticed have changed since they're always so stressed that they start to lash out at people. The adult figures (whether its the district people or school faculty or parents or whatever) all say that it's for our best interest, but at the same time the stress that we receive can make some of us go into withdrawl. Personally I've gone into a state of emotional depression (taking meds and everything) because school was such a stress factor in my life. School may teach us to manage our time better, but then the stress that comes with it cannot be healthy for us either. Of course, sitting in front of the TV or something while your HW sits is your fault, but still the principle of the idea remains the same when it comes to stress. Some people actually drop out since they're doing bad or just don't care. If you can someohow endure it, and graduate, you end up most likely with a stressfull job (even if it is something you may enjoy) and the cycle continues until you retire or whatnot. So bottom line - it definitely is something that needs to be resolved. There are ways that people can learn without stress, just that our society has not realized that at all.

Only thing that pressures me is my parents, not even faculty. I hate getting yelled at. But basically i live in a pressure free environment at school. Its great... For me anyway.

Well, if you're getting stressed, blow some steam here. Rant and spam...lol.

anyway, sure there's a lot of stress and pressure, but that's normal for anybody, they have only to realize it. Ignorance is a bliss sometimes.

Hmm, I think I may be in an interesting place to answer this question. My mommy pulled me out of school after the second grade, mostly because we lived in a little backwoods town with an incredibly poor school system.

So up until this fall I did not go to public school. No High School, no dances, no after school activities and almost no friends. This year I started going to school again, college (Clackamas Community College if you want to be precise) even though I was only sixteen at the time (just turned seventeen a few days ago).

It was very strange to say the least, and a huge blow to my mental well-being I think. Just being around people was stressful, not to mention the fact that since I didn’t hardly go to school before I have in incredibly hard time studying. I've managed to adapt somewhat but even just the one class I'm talking is almost more then I can handle.

For better or for worse I think that school is something kids need to go through. It's not so much teaching you how to get a job and such, but it teaches you how to live and interact with people. That more then anything else is important.

I'm not saying that I'm a complete social idiot, but I'm damn close. I wouldn't be surprised if I stay reclusive like I am now. I have friends who have no problems just going up and talking to strangers and I can even imagine how that feels, whenever I have to talk to someone or someone I don't know talks to me I get really tense and I have to force myself to say anything. I don't even like going into a store if I'll be the only one in there.

I really get pissed off when I'm assigned an assload of homework and projects. For me, if I understand the concept and can pass the test with flying colors, I don't see why I have to do problems 1 through 41276. That's my only real problem with school, I tend to leave school work at school and not do it at home  :?

well this is a good survey question. i am currently a junior in high school and i'd have to say i guess in many ways things there are quite frustrating at times. i find the people some of the most immature in existance and the extent to which they show their ignorance just irritates me. i only have a few problems with teachers and parents are in there as well. the thing is everybody has had or currently do have to put up with these related stresses. the way i see it is no matter what kind of things you may be going through in school, it does not shape who you are. to admit to that would be admitting that people can become products of their environments. i never believed in this point of psychology. to me every person makes all decisions for themselves, they decide what kind of person they are going to be and what they are going to do, so no matter what kind of stress you may be suffering, in the end any negative things that happen to you, you will them to happen. people need to take more reasponsibility for themselves instead of blaming things on others and the environment about them. was that a tangent? dammit i think it was sorry i'm really bad about that when i get started.
