Filesize limit question.

I know win98 only has a 2 gig limit, and 4 gigs when I use virtualdub.

Now that I've gotten the hang of dvd ripping, I'm thinking of upgrading my OS. What's the file limit size from win2000, ME, XP, etc...?

The current NTFS implmentation in WinXP allows for partitions up to 256 terabytes & files sizes up to 16 terabytes.

I believe Win2k is about the same.

Premiere 6+ should support exporting files larger then 2GB.

oh yeah and lets group these all together :

DOS, Win3.1, Win95/98/ME all use some version of FAT for their file system. FAT12 - FAT32.

NT 3.51/4, Win2K & WinXP use NTFS natively. WinXP & Win2K can read/write to FAT32 filesystems. NT cannot(without 3rd party drives, i.e you pay for them).

I would get Win2K as it's just as stable as WinXP just with out all the bloat and eye candy. If you hav dual monitors. You'll want XP. If you don't 2K will do you fine. Just make sure you install SP3 and all the hotfixes. If you buy a new version, most likely it will already have SP3 slipstreamed into the install.

Actually, you can run dual monitors on W2K, it just takes two video cards (one of which you must be able to disable VGA mode on).

What exactly does SP3 do that's so necessary, Klinky? I unfortunately don't have any of them installed, as every time I've ever tried my system has gotten royally fsck'd and I've had to completely reinstall W2k.

XP has better dual monitor controls.

SP3 adds stability & performance improvements. Also I couldn't play some games until I installed Service Pack 2. I just installed SP3 because I could. I haven't noticed any adverse effects :\

I won't argue that XP probably has better dual-monitor controls. It was a bit of a pain to get the two monitors running under W2k (and in my cases, requires having the lesser of the two vid. cards as the boot monitor).

Hmm. I've not really had any problems with stability, and just about everything I do with the computer these days has to do with editing. I don't know why I couldn't install the SPs... but the last time I tried (and this happened twice) I would get through the install and it would need to reboot, and then the system would error out on bootup. Oh well. It works as it is

Win98 has a max filesize of 4 gb when ripping (mine does at least) and just stick to Win98 for a few years since it's still going to be compatable with most progs... I tried ripping EoE and it'd quit at 96%, so I said "What the hell..." I changed the option from Max filesize to Every VOB file, works on movies over 4 gb, all you need is enough HD space (I barely ahd enough) I tried changing the max filesize and it stayed 4 gb... That's how I solved that problem!

Why not upgrade to something with more stability and a better/faster filesystem that can handle files larger then 4GB.

I had to reboot everyday with Win98. I can leave my computer on for weeks with out rebooting and it runs like a top with Win2k. Win2K with all the service packs kicks Win98's ass across the street. I thought I might miss DOS, but I've not touched it in years.
