Audio codecs
ok, I need definitive answers, in the low bitrate range (128 and lower), what audio codecs produce the best sound?

ogg vorbis and realaudio 8
realaudio can go much lower than vorbis, I've encoded stuff at 32 kbps (stereo) and it's been bearable. 64kbps is fine for general use. 48 is pushing it.
Vorbis sounds fine at 96kbps (it cant go much lower though)

Just use mp3, it's practically a universal standard. Most people still can't use Ogg Vorbis, and plenty of people still refuse to use Real (due to all the extra system-invading crap they include with the proprietary player).

I don't like RealOne at all. It makes many covert system modifications - not spyware-related, but invasive nonetheless. I had to go into my registry and manually remove several keys in order to prevent RealOne from autostarting some of its sub-applications on system startup.
The previous RealPlayer was far less invasive.

I don't think it matter though. Because I think there is a way to install 3rd party player that works fine. Correct me if I'm wrong, TAB?jbone wrote:I don't like RealOne at all. What are you doing that you need codecs that low? If you're using music, forget it, keep the bits, people will forgive you. If this is spoken word (like audiobooks or drama cd's, etc.), you can get away with 64k mp3 on the high end and 32 on the low end...24 gives wmp6.4 and some portables issues.
