Post by Farlo » Fri Feb 21, 2003 4:50 pm

I always thought parts of Jin-Roh looked old fashioned..

(I have not seen the film fully only bits at my cousins house so i may be completely off the mark...but it seemed to have a strage WWII feel to it.)

If this is for a video you could use clips from the episode of Cowboy Bebop "Black Dog Serenade", the flashback scene in that oozes with 50' style detective thrillers..

Porco Rosso is set in what is most likely 1920's Italy.

Kiki's Delivery Service is also set in a retro-Euro time and place, of the sort that Miyazaki specializes in.

Kishin Corps (original title Kishin Heidan) is set during World War II.

Oh, and Grave of the Fireflies as well as The Cockpit are set during World War II.

I don't know exactly when these are set, but Steam Detectives as well as Sakura Taisen may be worthwhile as well.

There's also Sherlock Hound (original title Great Detective Holmes) which is set in the 1890's.

Ok sakura wars and Steel angel kurumi are set in alternate 1920s 1930s. The buildings and the clothes reflect this. Mermaid forest is the 1930s. Off the top of my head I cannot think of any anime that are Specifically based in the 50s. Gatekeepers and Tenchi muyo in love both have great depictions of Japan in the late 1960s and 1970.

Brigadoon is set in mid-60s Japan, I think.

I only saw the first fansub episode. It was pretty strange, but it does have a retro vibe to it.

Nothing beat Laputa for an old-fashioned look! Gotta love those retro-style caps. Erm, what're they called?

Also, this anime I call dibs on making an AMV out of has a very retro-style and look. Don't let the title fool you: Geo-Armor Kishin Corps

I bet no one's even heard of it before, yeah but it has quite a bit of heart. :) Laputa's still a better bet though, and it's a total classic.

From mj's "Service with a Smile" AMV I get the feeling that Kiki's delivery service was done by the same artist as Laputa and has that retro-feel to it too.

I take that back, Rich mentioned Geo-Armor: Kishin Corps. Just he didn't mention the full name. Bleah and stuff. :D
