"War for peace" isn't necessarily an oxymoron. Just having a military can be considered "war for peace", for instance. Why? Because an aggressor country can be made to think twice about invading, if they're going to encounter resistance. It's not as black and white oxymoronic as it sounds.

As for Iraq - as I mentioned earlier, the time to do something was right after the Gulf War. If we hadn't reneged on our support promises to revolutionary groups before we left, they could've probably taken the country, and with injections of aid, be an ally now, or at least a relative non-issue. Or we should've taken out Saddam then, if he was so bad. Cruise missiles, "accidental" bombing, etcetera. Still, the UN, as I recall, didn't want us to do anything, and so essentially, besides pushing Iraqi troops out of Kuwait (which isn't a peachy country, either), the Gulf War was really rather pointless.

And now we've arrived at today's situation. If we continue and maybe step up our current containment/sanction methods, we'll get backlash over how many people are dying due to sanctions/Saddam. If we go in, we get backlash over how many people are dying from the war.

It's a no win situation that should've been taken care of long ago.
I'm out...

But in this situation the US IS the aggressor country.

In one sense. I think the UN has had much more leway due to the pressure from the US on Iraq. Now if only we'd back off :?

On a side note, any of you here about that plane crash in Iran? Over 300 died :( It was an old plane (about the same age as many of our commercial liners) and they haven't been able to keep the planes in good condition (lack of spare parts, technitions). They blame it on the US sanctions that have been imposed since the 70's :? Sad none the less.

This situation truely is nothing but bad, we have many other options other than sanctions and war but instead we choose to blow the hell out of anyone we choose  . If we were to fight and keep on fighting where would it end? A long time ago there was an empire on the southernmost part of Greece, it was called Sparta, they believed that war is the answer for life and that peace was an interruption to war. Now we are moving on the same path of the Spartans. I only ask that if we were to go to war in Iraq and Saddam was killed, where would it end? "Who would be the next target of the Empire of America?
Currently there are some things that give me hope, such as satire and protests. One of the best things I heard was someone telling a joke at an Anime Con, saying that "joking" "we should nuke the entire Middle East, that way the deserts will turn into glass and we can see the oil through it better".

Bullshit Iraq is the aggressor by not following its surrender terms.

Sparta was not an empire it was a city state that lived under a very strict militaristic goverment. It got it's butt kicked by athens.

Does your teacher shoot you in the head if you don't do an assignment? No, they yell at you until you do it, and if you still don't they start fucking with your grades or messing with your head. (Don't mean to be taking Iroq's side, I hate saddam more than I hate bush, and that's saying something, I'm just showing the flaw in your logic oni)

All I'm saying is that we should just fucking boycott all the damn oil we recieve from them (they're our 6th largest oil supplier) and cut all aid. Then start some economic sanctions until they're do damned starved to disobey us.
