There is an experimental Bit Torrent client that lets you cap the upload speed. This makes it possible to stay on longer as an uploader, and still use your connection, not get in trouble for insanely massive uploads, etc.

Some people have reported problems with it, like corrupted files, but I've never had a problem with it. This way, I can get a file, and seed it all night without killing my whole connection, some of which is needed for um, other things...

It also works great for people who have a hard cap on their cable modem. I got faster downloads (all 30k of bandwidth

) at my mom's house by capping the upload, whereas if I didn't, the download would crawl along at 10k.

That leads to a download page for the cappable client. Don't be a dick, share a reasonable portion of your upstream.

Klinky, correct me if I'm wrong, but once you stop your server, no one will be able to upload/download the file ?

A little suggestion, as bitTorrent seems to be useful, maybe we could share more than the ddr2 (actually I'd love to see the ddr1 now

) with this technique...
We could do something well organised (with beginnig and ending dates...and so on...)...this needs more people creating servers, I suppose. (using BT as a server seems soooo complicated...)

Well you need a tracker server. Tracker servers are hardcodec into the torrent file. So if my tracker server went offline then no-one could get the file.

However, I don't need to actually be sharing the file for people to be able to download, so long as someone else has parts that are needed or the complete download.

The Tracker server doesn't take up many resources or bandwidth, so it's easy to leave it running.

Well Kinky, if you want to use this as a permanet solution, then I won't mind advertising, I've work at a Anime Reviews Website that gets about 1000+ visitors a day... BTW, you're connection uses a Static or Dynamic IP?

*ahem* I was thinking about using this version since I already have the file on my computer and just want to upload...is there a problem about that ? I don't really want my internet connection to be slowed just because I want to help...

I am on a dynamic ip, but it hasn't changed in like months :\

hn.org is my dynamic domain name, if it changes, nothing bad will happen. I'll just have to update my hn.org account.

I don't see any problem in slowing your upload down so you can browse around and download properly. On Edonkey, I have to limit my uploads to 22KB(of 32KB) so that I don't notice extreme lagginess when visiting sites.

Well, I'd recommend you using the normal BT client... if you use the CVS client, you're download speed will not be good, if everyone had this kinda mindset, you might as well go use Kazaa, cause it'll be no better.

I use a dyanmic IP too, but just to play safe... I get my server to reconnect every 24 hours so as to refresh the line.
