The funny thing about all this. Most anime isn't aimed at adults but teenagers.
Its like a 5 year difference between our target age group (North America) and Japans and yet it changes everything.
I do think North American cartoons that are aimed at a higher age (I should point a difference to aimed at lower ages as compaired to aimed at everyone like Disney) try a bit too hard to make certain no one can mistake it for a kiddy story. I don't think most animes are adult oriented (not including the porn ones) but I do think it asks a lot more from an audience than your typical movie or TV show.
Take Cowboy Bebop, it has only 5 of 26 episodes related to the Spike/Vicious life is a dream storyline. Yet everyone seems to want to write their own theory on what happened before when Spike and Vicious worked together and theories on what the story meant.
