500kbps sounds like an attempt at a DBZ RM encode

Yes, 500 mbps is a HORRIBLE bitrate to use. Assuming you're not encoding 320x240 files, but even if you are, theyre going to look like dirt. You can only really get away with 500kbps and under with realmedia.
oh! well, the framerate is 25fps, cos im an aussie and we use PAL (yay!) so there is no instance of pull-up or pull-down. Well, im encoding at 400x300, 600 kbps now, and its about 150mb per episode. thats good enough quality for me, any higher than that and i dont really notice any differences at all, apart from filesize! what kbps do ppl in here use? i dont have that big a hard drive either, so...

We don't.

We use either the AVS -> MJPEG switch, or we make HuffYUV's of the DVDs.

right. If you're talking about distro its a different story. However kbps shouldnt even come into play when considering source :\
I find it hard to believe you don't notice a difference at 600 kbps. Especially with DivX 5.02. If you were saying there was no difference after 2000 kbps, I might believe you, but 600, definitely no. You need a better monitor.

...or we just create table of contents files out of the VOBs, and edit directly from MPEG-2 :)

I know about you trythil, you only need the VOBs and a TOC file since you can make one in Transcode's mpeg3toc program, but for us Windoze users, it's more complicated.

For distro, I usually do a 2-pass encode, or I may try Quant 2 XviD for my next distro, I'm gonna run a test.

well i dont have oodles of hard drive estate to screw around with, so huffyuv is out of the question (sadly....) i need to save up and get a 120gb 7200 rpm hard disk. im workin with a 40gb 5400 rpm at the moment (not too happily though)
I dont want absolutely perfect quality, but then i dont want eye-watering uselessly encoded crap on screen either. Whats the most efficient settings for DivX 5, in terms of Size vs Quality? When do the data rate settings become superfluous? thats all i need to know, so i can go from there.

well 500kbps is less than most downloaded footage
something more like 1500-2000 kbps or above is what you'd want in that case :\ although I dont see why the mjpeg switch wont work

I'd say doing a 100% quality encode would give you the most bang for your buck.
